Capitans

Have these ever been flown?

I see there is vehicle access on the west end with a few potential launches about 2500-3000 ft over landable LZ's that are about a 6:1 on the south side and a 7:1 on the north side.

I was looking just because I have work coming up in Roswell soon.

Riker, Curt, and Dave C. Searched the Capitans by approaching from the SW
None of the three found a good launch. It’s said to be four wheel drive and
“remote to the max” (Dave C.)
Lower there is a 600’ training hill (White Oaks) but a hard carry up for HG. Good for PG.
Near where Smoky The Bear was rescued.

Sounds like it hasn't been checked out in several years (decades?). From the SW side, I've read reports of folks driving cars up so the 4x4 need may have changed. It looks like there were some fires so possibly some more open launch areas. "Remote to the MAX" - The SW side is 8 miles as the crow flies to the closest beer store and gas station.

The Guads, now there is remote.

Will let you know if it looks viable when I go out there to camp.

I've learned the hard way that access is everything.

Actually, the drive from Carlsbad to the Guads launch is about the same time as driving from Cox Field to the Dry Canyon launch. Plus to the Guads, you can drive a 2wd car.

I drove out to the Capitans last week in my station wagon with my e-dirt bike in the back. I rode up the mountain in no time. The road is in good condition, but you'll need a normal 4wd. LZ options are nil except a private ranch. I chipped around at how to get in/ across the land. No. That is ok, because launch there would require the building of a ramp or the ability to not slip launching off a slide covered with human head size boulders.

It was great fun exploring. 16 miles on the dirt bike! Lots of elk and only 1 rattlesnake.

The day before I went to Guad Mt National Park and jogged 18 miles. That park is cool. The only way you get up there is to hike up there.

Thanks for the report Nate!

Head sized boulders and only one rattlesnake? You New Mexico pilots are a tough bunch! :)
