Gliding into Torrey Pines Cliff lift zones sans park launch Ideas are invited on topic. Many birds do the deed. What are historical flights where such was achieved. Start: Exploratory method #1 wrote: From remote non-park launch gain altitude enough to soar into the Torrey Pines cliff lift. Fly the cliff lift. As far as I know, the first gliding flight over the Torrey Pines cliffs was made by Charles Lindbergh on the maiden flight of his new Bowlus Paperwing sailplane, the Anne Lindbergh, on February 22, 1930. He launched from Mt. Soledad, rode the lift over Torrey, and landed near Del Mar. The sailplane had a max l/d of 20:1. Details can be found in Gary Fogel's recent, highly-illustrated paperback, The Torrey Pines Gliderport (2014). http://www.arcadiapublishing.com/book/9781467131360 |

We might have to discover some primary reference for a quote that was given in an article of 2010 about a 1910 flight "Frazier Curtis ushered in the first flights off the Torrey Pines cliffs in 1910." Ref: http://www.lajollalight.com/news/2010/a ... liderport/ A different source notes: "Frazier Curtis, is really given credit for forming the Escadrille Lafayette" ... to be verified. The quote was from: Flying Magazine - Nov 1934 - Page 282. Some editor placed a caution on research: "There is often confusion between the Lafayette Escadrille and the Lafayette Flying Corps, exacerbated by the inaccuracies in the movie Flyboys." Frazier Curtis was captioned as being on the left: https://www.neam.org/lafayette-escadril ... enguin.jpg Photo on: https://www.neam.org/lafayette-escadrille/training.html Quote: Extensive article bio on Frazier Curtis: A bit of a challenge to see the PDF, but here is the search snip: [PDF]Winter 2006 - La Jolla Historical Society https://lajollahistory.org/download_file/view/142/108/ La Jolla Flyboy Frazier Curtis. By Sandy Spalding ... group, Frazier Curtis, lived in. La Jolla? Born at the family's ..... ish pilot's license No. 780. Curtis was back in ... Some archive paragraphs are in: https://archive.org/stream/NewEnglandav ... k_djvu.txt In that source: "It is believed that Curtis was the first American pilot to go over to Europe to offer his services to the Allied Air Force, having sailed from Boston on the Arabic, Sept. 2, 1914."

Quote: The PDF newsletter mentioned: " From the time of their arrival, the couple captivated the locals’ attention when it was reported in July that Curtis had acquired a Shafler glider kit and was putting it together. A number of people gathered on the slopes of Mount Soledad in August to watch his attempts at flight with his wife running down hill, rope in hand, trying to get him aloft. It was the beginning of his love affair with flying." Quote: MAYBE THERE IS A MISSPELLING IN THAT PARAGRAPH: Consider "Shaffer" of maybe C. T. Shaffer. See hereon a clip of a 1910 advertisement in Aeronautics: Attachment: AeronauticsADVforShaffer.jpg [ 17.94 KiB | Viewed 6881 times ] Attachment: AeronauticsAugust1910p54Shaffer.jpg [ 44.36 KiB | Viewed 6880 times ] We are face that Frazier Curtis has one "s" in name; this is distinct from the Curtiss family name (two" "ss" } in early aeronautics. So, we still seek definitive reference for cliff-lift gliding for him at Torrey. ====================================== Not to lose a San Diego lore page on Lindberg: http://www.charleslindbergh.com/history/gliders.asp |
