It was another Second Sunday at Torrey with no hang gliders flying thanks to USHPA and the City of San Diego.
I was there with one of my hang gliders, but I was not able to fly because of USHPA's expulsion and the City of San Diego supporting a requirement of USHPA membership to fly in our own City Park. In other words, we now have very clear evidence that USHPA is killing hang gliding at Torrey Pines. Of course, I've known that for well over a decade now.
This Second Sunday wasn't too marred with attacks or confrontation other than Robin Marien and David Metzgar mockingly waving to me as I was leaving. I think they were waiting for me to go so they could light up whatever they like to smoke.
There was a bright spot. I met a young fellow (Thomas) who expressed an interest in hang gliding. I spent some time explaining various aspects of the sport and I directed him to John Heiney's demo reel video. He showed enough interest that I called John and gave Thomas John's phone number. Hopefully he'll become another San Diego hang gliding pilot.
The Torrey Hawks Hang Gliding Club lives on!
