Dockweiler RHG Diary

Honoring the rich history and bright future of gliding at Dockweiler Beach

I was searching YouTube for Otto Meet videos when I found this cute one from Joe Faust. I'm not sure if it has been posted elsewhere on our forum, but it was a good excuse to bump this topic. Enjoy!   :)

I just watched the Video, the Video of a couple Happy Aviators. I just say this: Maybe I will someday get Myself down to Dockweiler in order that I will be able to do some Dune Flying Yea Baby!

December 2, 2025

Joe Faust and I had an enjoyable day at Dockweiler today. I think we may have flown about a dozen flights each. These are two frames from our day:

The wind was relatively straight in (maybe slightly north sometimes). It was both moderate and pleasant. It was enough to kite the glider back up the hill, but not quite enough to soar the Condor 225. We mostly flew straight out from the hill with good launches and landings in all cases. We had numerous spectators stop by, and we steered them to Windsports School (we handed out many of the flyers in the rack on the pole).

Thanks for a fun day Joe!!
Thanks to Frank for the Condor!!

Here's a video compilation of all of yesterday's flights that were captured on my camera (some weren't filmed):

Special thanks to Frank Colver for for being part of the team (along with Joe and I) who opened Dockweiler Beach for all citizens. Special thanks also to Frank for the gift of his Wills Wing Condor 225. We continue to put it to good use!

And Joe's harness was a gift from Frank also!
What a great day we had.
Bob brought some pumpkin pie.
And we had after-flight dinner at Habit in El Segundo.

What a neat gift ... the video made of our flights. Much appreciated!

Tuesday was a busy day for Joe and I.

We started off at the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. Joe went first:

Then I spoke:

Both of our speeches were very well received by the Board of Supervisors.

Then we drove to Dockweiler beach for some hang gliding. During the drive, we monitored the progress of the San Diego City Council meeting. It turns out that we had just gotten to the Dockweiler parking lot when the San Diego City Council began taking up non-agenda public comment. Here's that speech:

Finally, we had a nice day of flying and public outreach at Dockweiler Beach:

Thanks for a great day Joe!!

Joe and I flew with Ground Slammer today, and we were so disappointed ...    :(

We spent a whole day of flying and didn't get to see any Ground Slamming ... at all!!    ;)

Seriously, it was a fun day and quite an honor to meet and fly with Rich. The winds were light but we all had good flights.

Thanks to Rich for making the journey, and thanks to Joe for buying us a great dinner!!

I'll add some photos and videos in a future post.
