I looked back through the calendar, and Otto's birthday hasn't fallen on a Monday or Tuesday for several years. Of course, we haven't always held the event on Otto's exact birthday. We typically picked the closest weekend day. For the past several years that hasn't mattered with respect to the flying requirements since they would have been the same on Otto's actual birthday or the closest weekend day. But this year it makes a big difference with regard to who can participate. For that reason, I propose that this year's event be held on Otto's actual birthday.

Either way, anyone wanting to fly on Otto's actual birthday should apply for a waiver as soon as possible. So please spread the word that flying on Otto's birthday in 2022 will require signing the Dockweiler waiver.

Bob, We have won the war, USHPA capitulated. University of California is exempt from any prosecution because of conflict of interest and ACA is too small. But on this date you will receive new powers directed against the city of San Diego if they continue their court actions against you. You will have a new badge for your jacket.

Thanks for your optimism Doug!!

On the other hand, I still cannot fly at Sylmar without USHPA, so the war isn't won ... yet.

I hope to see you at Dockweiler this year. To fly on Mondays or Tuesdays (when Windsports is closed), you'll need to fill out the Los Angeles County waiver.

The waiver is available in the "Rules and Waiver" topic here on the Friends of Dockweiler forum. But it can take weeks (or sometimes months) to get the form signed off by Los Angeles County Beaches and Harbors, so please send it in as soon as possible if you want to fly on that Monday.

The good news is that the waiver also lets you fly on any Monday or Tuesday (or any other day that Windsports is closed). So it's good to do it either way, and it doesn't cost anything. I've also attached a copy of the waiver to this post (below).

Thanks again to Joe Faust and Frank Colver for being part of the team that opened up Dockweiler to everyone on Mondays and Tuesdays!    :salute: :salute:

Also, it's a good time to start spreading the word on other hang gliding web sites. I just started a topic on the Sylmar forum:

Hello Sylmartians,

This year Otto Lilienthal's birthday falls on Monday, May 23rd, 2022. Several of us are planning to fly at Dockweiler that day to remember that pioneer of hang gliding and to commemorate the first "Otto Meet" which was held in 1971.

This year will be the first year that Otto's birthday falls on a Monday or Tuesday since July of 2017 when we got the site opened for for flying with a waiver on days that Windsports is closed. So if Windsports follows their regular schedule, you will need to have an approved Dockweiler waiver to fly there on Otto's birthday.

The good news is that the waiver is free.
The bad news is that it can take weeks or months to get approved.

So if you'd like to fly at Dockweiler on Otto's birthday this year, it's a good idea to get your waiver signed and sent in as soon as possible.

I tried to post a blank waiver form here, but this forum doesn't seem to accept PDF files. You can find the waiver here on the Friends of Dockweiler forum:

    https://ushawks.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=44&t=2865

You can also find more discussion here:

    https://ushawks.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=44&t=3845

I hope to see you all on Otto's birthday! 8-)

Please share the date on any site you can.

Thanks!

Here's Frank's recent post on hanggliding.org:

The flight pioneer's 174th birthday is on Monday, May 23rd and will be celebrated by a gathering of hang glider folks and vintage gliders at Dockweiler Beach, CA. There is an advantage to his birthday falling on a Monday this year because with a waiver pre-approved by LA County anyone can fly there without needing any club membership or any kind of insurance, so all are welcome. This is not an organized event, just a time for old time style beach flights and sharing of stories. Come with or without a glider, but you will need to get that waiver filled out and sent with enough time for approval and return to you by US mail because there will be gliders there for any HG pilots to fly.

Thanks Bob. I didn't copy it here because you had already covered it on the Hawks, but it's good to repeat it.

If you look back to my earlier post (dated January 3rd), you'll see that the waiver had been downloaded 8 times by then. As shown above, it's only up to 10 now. That's not very many downloads (just 2) in one week. That seems to go along with the general decline in activity on that site. There was a time when there would be dozens (maybe into the hundreds) of posts every day. I wonder how many other people have been banned who we may not even know are gone. Someone should ask Jack to post a list of his banned pilots as we do here on the U.S. Hawks. Of course, I'm not sure if it could be trusted anyway.

Several years ago I did ask him to publish or provide a list of banned people and he refused. As I recall he did have you and maybe one or two others listed in some section of the forum but I haven/t looked at any sections there, other than the General HG Subject, in a number of years. There certainly wasn't a comprehensive list, as I remember.
