Aaarrrrgh!!!

At 10:41am I had the forum software send out an emailing to our members announcing the voting. It gave me three errors (I think we have 3 bad email addresses), but that's normally OK. So I waited to get the email. I waited, and I waited, and I waited.

So a little after noon, I decided to try sending it again. I got the same 3 errors, and then I immediately got ... BOTH messages!

Anyway, I'm sorry for sending out two copies. Fortunately I was suspicious enough to add a pre-emptive apology in the "P.S." of the second message:

Hello Members of the US Hawks Forum!!

Bill Cummings has been kind enough to be the Voting Chairman for our second US Hawks Trial Voting Test titled "Favorite Flying Sites".

There have been 34 nominations, and the voting will be open for about a week. You can see the rules, nominations, and cast your vote at:

    http://ushawks.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1280

Please join in this experiment to see if we can build an on-line hang gliding association that's governed by its members.

Thanks very much, and please call or write back if you have any questions or suggestions.

Sincerely,
Bob Kuczewski
858-204-7499

P.S. I apologize if this message arrives twice it was sent from the forum software and the first one did not seem to go out, and I didn't get a copy either. So please let me know if you do get this twice, and please accept my apologies.

Hello MrBirdman57!!!

Thanks for posting!!!!

The purpose of the US Hawks Hang Gliding Association is to give more control to pilots. This test voting period is our way of "working out the bugs" in the system. You can help us by voting using the [vote] and [/vote] tags in your post.

Just put up a post (like you did), and order your choices with the numbers in each choice. Since you mentioned Lookout Mountain as one of your favorites, and it is listed as candidate 10 on the list (see first post of this topic), then your vote would be entered like this:

         [vote] 10 [/vote]

If you thought that the Empire State building (number 27 on the list) would be your second choice, then you would vote like this:

         [vote] 10 27 [/vote]

You can list as many choices as you like, and you can set any to be equal by using the equal sign between them.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them in this topic or send me a PM message or even give me a phone call (858-204-7499). Either way, I'm happy to help!

Mostly, thanks for being a member of the US Hawks Forum!!!

Howdy pilots,

I didnt not know to scroll down and see the voting instructions and the list. Now I see it. I'll amend my post. In the future it would be good to say scroll down to see voting instructions. The average age of hang glider pilots is above that of golfers. Many are not that computer savy as our younger PG counter parts.

My Vote 4 10 35

I'd like to add #35 Ellenville NY

BTW: The site of my dreams where I flew only three times was on the bluffs of the northshore of Long Island where I grew up, back in 1986, off of the Rocky Point vacant lot launch. It would take a once a year NorthEast Wind before the associated storm would come in.

Welcome Henry!!!!

Bill Cummings is in charge of this voting topic, so I'll leave it to his discretion whether we can add Ellenville or not.

But it really doesn't matter too much because the purpose of this topic is just to get us up and running with a national on-line voting system for the US Hawks Hang Gliding Association. So your excellent input on how we might make things clearer is much more on-topic than your vote. Thanks!!

Regarding the voting itself, to make your vote count, you'll need to enter it like this:

  [vote] 4 10 35 [/vote]

The [vote] and [/vote] tags will make your vote stand out to the eye (light letters on a dark blue background as you can see in Joe's post above yours), and it will also help our automated system tally the votes. It's not too hard to tally them by hand now, but we'd like to eventually be able to handle national elections, so that's why we're working out the bugs on these fun topics.

Thanks very much for being a member of the US Hawks. I think we're finally getting our wings under us.    ;)

Sincerely,
Bob Kuczewski

P.S. Henry, your vote for #35 - Ellenville reminded me of something VERY important that I forgot to do when I posted the list of candidates. We should ALWAYS have a "none-of-the-above" option (just added as Candidate 0) for people who are not satisfied with the existing options. That would ensure that if the choices were not complete, we can still get to the right answer. If Candidate 0 should win, then it means that the majority is NOT satisfied with the choices and we should re-open the nominations process to more choices. The best thing about ALWAYS having an option 0 is that it keeps some small group from dictating a limited set of choices and then claiming legitimacy for the result. This was something else that we saw with the HGAA, and I think the "none-of-the-above" option will help overcome that.

So Henry, your vote for Ellenville has been one of the most helpful yet!!! Thanks!!

Henry I put a zero in my vote to help you out getting in Ellenville after the window closed on the nominations.
If enough other members want to reopen the closed nominations by adding a zero that will allow you to get the late nomination in.
I don't mean to come off like a hard case but I think I'll go nuts if I shift into reverse now to make and exception to the nomination rules/guidelines.
This way everyone gets to decide rather than just me alone as to making an exception or not.

Bill, you have the wisdom of Solomon!!

That's the perfect solution, and I'm adding a zero to my vote in solidarity with your wisdom and generosity.

  0 1 4 2 3 5 15 8 14 6 25 33 10 29 31 32

This provides another dimension of our proposed voting system that we can explore!!
