A correction to the NatGeo article saying bruises being the only injury that day: Our daughter Laura broke a toe at the May 23, 1971 Otto Lilienthal meet. She was running down the hill enthusiastically, but without a glider, when she stubbed and broke the big toe. I remember that hill as being very hard dry adobe clay. Frank |

Page 1 of that 1986 diary: Attachment: sm1986Mar19p1Diary.jpg [ 172.12 KiB | Viewed 24419 times ] Confirmed year:1986; only on page 1 is "1985" written in error, but on subsequent pages the "1986" is placed consistently. "Wednesday" matches the date shown in 1986 for the feast day. |

You wrote that in 1986 on the day after my 51st birthday. You have been a continuing birthday present, to my flying thoughts and imaginations, before and after. Thanks Joe. ![]() Frank |

S-SA Attachment: Certificado Self Soar.jpg [ 489.28 KiB | Viewed 24378 times ] Some Otto members of Self-Soar Association received a direct certificate. But such was not essential. Otto Members could fly self-regulated and self-certified. From the roots and actions of S-SA came later clubs and other orgs including the first two distinct USHGAs, one "Glider" and one "Gliding. Chuck Stahl was a United Airlines captain pilot. Richard Miller was a prior editor of Soaring Magazine for Soaring Society of America and second user that we know about using Dockweiler, first being Jim Hobson. Self-Soar Association had members in 23 nations. The president did the handwriting on the body of the certificate. |
