Black Cap

Black Cap is the launch just above Lakeview town. It is moderately sloped dirt and suitable for HG and PG. It is a popular launch for paragliders and the PG nationals have been held here.

This launch has been improved a lot over the years and since my first launch there in 1989 the direction that one can launch safely has been opened up to a wider range thanks to the help of the local Chamber of Commerce.

This is the launch used for the spot landing competition for the Chamber's Umpteenth Annual fly in every July 4th. Many XC flights have been made from here and the Glass Offs to be had here are great. Its proximity to town makes this popular with pilots staying in Lakeview.

Directions: Follow "Hang Glider Launch" sign on Lakeview Main Street It takes you up center street past the swimming pool keep following signs.

Hunters - LZ
Hunters is a flat field with a resident windsock at the corner of the lake. "Old Faithful" the geyser that erupts every 90 seconds on the lake next to the resort is also a great wind indicator.

I wish that Your Black Cap Training Hill was here in Modesto California. That way when John Heiney comes up here to Modesto California. John and I could drive to this Black Cap, set up His I believe it is called am 135, or 130 W-W Alpha Single Surface Glider. That way after a thorough Pre-Flight., and Hang - Check. I could then wait for a Cycle to roll through. Then will Call Clear and then proceed to while My first two or three Strides would be long. Then I would-Will using long Strides launch Myself into the Air. Yes Baby!

OK I totally spaced regarding My Coments about how John and I could go launch His WW 235 Alpha i do not know where this Black Cap is located? I imagine that it is down somewhere in Southern California? Anyways I imagine that regarding My being able to be able to Launch My self into the Air. Will need to happen somewhere up here in a northern California. Ok I have a Question regarding this Black Cap Launch. How often do Pilots experience conditions where They can get up, Fly out on an XC Route?

I visited Mt. Diablo in Northern Califoria years ago and it looked launchable 360 degrees just like your launch.
The specific, sanctioned launch sites at Mount Diablo are restricted to two primary windows managed by the Wings of Rogallo:Southwest to West (SW–W): This is the window for the primary Juniper Launch (elevation 2,850 feet), which sits near the Diablo Valley Overlook.West to Northeast (W–NE): This is the window for Moses Rock Ridge (elevation 3,140 feet), accessed via the Juniper Trail.Critical Warning: Running or launching into North (N) or Northwest (NW) winds at the Juniper site creates severe rotor turbulence because you are launching on the lee side of the north ridge. Pilots have historically had to deploy emergency reserve parachutes due to the violent sink and air disturbance in that bowl when the wind shifts away from the safe SW-W window.
