This is a serious - very serious - problem. I do think it's important to present statistics in both raw numbers and normalized by participation, but there's no doubt in my mind that there are people the sport of paragliding who are intentionally suppressing the information needed for people to make their own decisions.

Paragliding death #1310

"He decided to take a joyride and boarded a paraglider for a tandem flight with pilot Firoz Ali from Uttar Pradesh [India]. Witnesses said the paraglider crashed and the tourist, who was on the front end of the glider, was seriously injured. However, the pilot escaped with minor injuries. The victim was rushed to a Manali hospital where he succumbed to his injuries."

"The authorities of the technical committee said all applicants had failed to comply with the norms of the Himachal Pradesh Aero Sports Rules and thus no licence to conduct tandem flights had been issued or renewed for the past two years."

"However, the ground realities at the Solang Valley were different as over 100 pilots were engaged in offering joyrides to tourists. A local pilot alleged that a majority pilots were unqualified and lacked expertise, leading to accidents."

Paragliders frolicking in smooth ocean air

Urban dictionary
frolick. Prancing around like a fool, basically skipping, but moving your hands around frantically, with high knees.

--yes, the Norwegian parachutist on the green and yellow paraglider was killed.

Could you land a hang glider in this field? Of course! What could be better? But the soaring parachutist being loaded into the helicopter broke both legs and suffered internal injuries trying to land there. What eventually happens to inland soaring parachutists is, during the last phase of a landing approach, the paraglider encounters turbulence generated by local ground heating and collapses, dumping the "commander" to the ground hard enough to break something. Usually, it's one leg, but often it is two. Not only are both legs broken, but due to the force generated by falling several meters, the femurs - the strongest bones in the body - snap like toothpicks. The back and pelvis are commonly damaged as well. The result is the famous "paraglider's limp," worn like a badge of honor by soaring parachutists as if to say, "Look at me, I was skillful enough to avoid getting killed!" when it was really nothing but dumb luck. A crap shoot survivor to make noise while many others lay silent.

Paragliding - the closest thing to flying like a cement block.*

* helicopter required.

I do think it's important to present statistics in both raw numbers and normalized by participation

When I started producing a list of paragliding injuries and fatalities around 2008, I realized immediately that there were far too many single leg fractures to document, so I listed only accidents involving both broken legs.
https://web.archive.org/web/20120104172 ... gy2011.htm
The important thing to take away is that these are not "crash landings" in the manner of a bad hang glider landing. Rather, these are what happens when your "aircraft" vanishes and drops you vertically out of the sky. This represents gambling with your body on a level never seen before the advent of paragliding. It adds an additional level of (unacceptable) risk to that accepted by freeflight participants using (energy-retentive and protective) airframes. To me, it is no longer pure aviation, but a deadly mania incorporating a very high level of denial.

In terms of statistics, it is important to understand what participation means. If you average out all the beach flying and one-time novice registrations and public joy-riders with inland mountain thermal flying, what does that mean? Lots of people and organizations generate "statistics" by inflating participation numbers and present them to the public to make the case that "paragliding is safe." There were over 70,000 joyrides given in Fethiye last year. Each joyrider increases global participation under the guise of "instruction." This dilution of participation numbers is part of the statistics scam. It prevents the truth about paragliding from coming to light.

So much good news today about paragliding...

http://www.tribuneindia.com/news/himach ... 77241.html
Kullu, India, May 6
The district administration has banned paragliding at the Solang valley in Manali after the death of a tourist from Mumbai on Monday.

http://www.tribuneindia.com/news/himach ... 76099.html
The deceased, Krishan Tripathi (31) from Seawood North in Navi Mumbai, had come here on May 2 with his wife Aastha Goil and daughter Janaki Tripathi. He decided to take a joyride and boarded a paraglider for a tandem flight with pilot Firoz Ali from Uttar Pradesh. Witnesses said the paraglider crashed and the tourist, who was on the front end of the glider, was seriously injured. However, the pilot escaped with minor injuries. The victim was rushed to a Manali hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
-------------------
The man killed was a tandem "joyrider," as they so honestly call it in India.
The commander of the paraglider was unregistered, as the law requires.

Hamas is training West Bank Palestinian students in Malaysia to conduct operations as part of the organization’s military wing, the Shin Bet security service says. The students are meant to operate undercover upon their return to the West Bank. While Israel last year claimed that Hamas was training its operatives in paragliding techniques in Malaysia, a claim that Malaysia denied, this is the first time the Shin Bet has presented detailed allegations about Hamas activities in that country.

Witnesses say the man disappeared mid-glide below the top of the rock face located west of Clover Point. Jones says the man fell into a bank, but other paragliders moved him onto a nearby beach and were assisting him when first responders arrived. He says the man was complaining of back pain and might have suffered a spinal injury.
--------------------
Much more good news is on the way. The inland thermal season is coming. It used to be something to look forward to.

PG fatality #1310 *
Fatal accident of a paraglider

Note: A previous free-flight entry was moved to #152 Powered paraglider fatality when a photograph revealed an engine.

Also today, a collapse results in a broken back.

Rick,

This is more for the doubting paraglider pilots (or potential PG pilots) who may be reading this -

I've read collapsible canopy pilot comments along the lines that Rick Masters gets PG accident and fatality reports from the internet. Then he makes claims that PGs are unsafe and/or that hang gliders are safer. That internet news reports can't be trusted. That, for that reason, Rick Master's claims are worthless.

Well, I have a question for these "doubters". Do you think that Rick "invents" online news reports of PG accidents and fatalities? Does he go around creating false News Reporting web pages where he then posts invented soaring parachute incident reports?

Anyone thinking that any of the above is true is seriously delusional. Perhaps even fatally so.

How Rick finds the PG accident/fatality stories is probably a story unto itself. But serious and valid news IS reported on the internet, and more so as time has gone on. As far as soaring parachute (PG) accident reports posted to the web, . . . I wonder how many News Agencies don't follow up to find out that the pilot later died from their injuries? I wonder how many soaring parachute (PG) accidents never see the light of day - as far as a web page story by some local News Reporting agency goes? I wonder how many such News stories never make it onto a web page where Rick can discover and report them?

In thinking about these questions it seems VERY likely that Rick Masters' efforts can not know the true (LARGER!) number of soaring parachute (PG) accident/fatality reports - BECAUSE they don't all show up on the internet. I wonder how many get "missed"? 10%, 20% as many as 50%?

It would make sense that fatalities would be more likely to be reported. And more likely that mere (?) injuries would go unreported by internet News Sites. And, let's not forget that, at times, a collapse crash victim dies weeks or months after a seemingly "typical" soaring parachute (PG) accident. Such a death is likely never noted by an internet News story.

The implied title of this thread is that soaring parachutes (aka, collapsible canopies, paragliders, etc.) are INFERIOR soaring devices when compared to hang gliders. I see no doubt possible on this point.

Hang gliders can stall near the ground - and fail to recover - YES! Hang Gliders can tumble is severe turbulence, suffer an airframe failure and fall to the ground - Yes! A hang glider pilot can deploy their emergency parachute in such an accident - and the chute can fail to save them - YES!

But one thing that can NEVER happen in a hang glider is that moderate thermal (or mechanical) induced turbulence causes our air framed wings to crumple up into useless non aerodynamic wads of flimsy nylon fa-BRIC[K]. Result: Dropping the occupant violently to the ground near the speed of a falling BRICK.

Even a hang glider with a broken frame can descend slow enough - due to induced drag and partial aerodynamic forces caused by the still intact wing - to allow a pilot to (crash) land without serious injury or fatality - AND that even includes if their emergency chute fails to work properly or to even deploy.

And even a hang glider that has suffered a stall near to the ground can protect its pilot from serious injury - BECAUSE the AIR FRAME will absorb a significant amount of the energy during a bad landing/crash. This slows the pilot's momentum toward an impact with the ground. And THAT can make the difference between LIFE and DEATH - Minor Injury or Major Injury!

Choosing to fly a hang glider provides the SUPERIOR safety feature of an air frame - as it exists as a potential life saving mechanism!

Choosing to fly a soaring parachute (aka, collapsible canopy, paraglider, etc.) on the other hand, UTTERLY DISCARDS the safety features inherent to aircraft that include an air frame. Doing so involves the choice of an INFERIOR flight technology. Doing so makes injury and death significantly more likely.

If the goal is being able to enjoy minimal soaring flight for as long - and as safely - as possible, . . . then the safer (e.g., Superior) version would be the thinking person's method of achieving that goal.

Taking less important things into consideration as well, which way you go in the world of minimal soaring most importantly involves how much you value your life and physical well being. If you want to improve your safety and airborne longevity, then choose the superior Air Framed means of minimal soaring - Hang Gliding.

Another paraglider breaks his back today. Now a life of pain to look forward to.
http://www.leveil.fr/Fil-info/Un-parape ... ieu-105543

Also today, "severe leg injuries" are reported in a crash. These often include open (compound) leg fractures where jagged shards of leg bone protrude from the flesh. Broken femers are also common. These are the strongest bones in the body. It takes a LOT of force to break them. It comes from falling out of the sky, gaining speed like a falling brick, until they slam into the ground and crumple.
