Wills Wing, Hang Gliding and the FAA

Postby magentabluesky » Mon May 25, 2015 12:01 pm

I think it is inevitable the FAA is going to regulate Hang Gliding, after all the FAA is already putting Steve Pearson’s (Wills Wing) picture on the back of FAA issued Pilot Licenses.

Some people may not understand my sense of humor, but I do honor and respect Steve Pearson, Mike Meier and the Wills Wing Team for dedicating their lives to Hang Gliding. Without their commitment to this sport, we would not be blessed with the safe fun gliders we enjoy. Thank you.

Mike, I have a lot of respect for Wills Wing and its history but let's not sugar-coat it. Mike Meier was quite enthusiastic about paragliders when they first came out and even said he enjoyed flying them more than hang gliders. WW had a lot of dealerships selling paragliders when one of their third-party (I think) models came apart in Hawaii and killed a young aerobat as his horrified wife watched. She successfully sued Wills Wing and Rob Kells, winning a landmark judgement disallowing waivers in Hawaii and crippling all adventure sports marketing there. Wills Wing saw the writing on the wall and bailed out of paragliding. But it wasn't as if they recognized paragliding as a substandard form of flight unworthy of Wills Wing and nobly stood above the fray. They were forced to get out of paragliding.

Maybe Wills Wing will advance to press USHPA to become USHGA. The silence is deadening.
What say you, Team Wills Wing ???? Have you a clear position statement about the need to have HG focus?

I can't believe it's 2015 with over 1300 deaths from paragliding and NOBODY'S taken a stand against it.
But how can they, with hang gliding and paragliding joined together in the same organization/corporation?
