Every time there's a paragliding accident at Torrey, the press reports it as a "hang gliding" accident.

I always wonder where they get their mis-information. Do you think they might be getting it from the concessionaire?

Do you think they might be getting it from the concessionaire?

I've seen it happen where players think they can lower the heat by blaming another type of aircraft but usually the press doesn't need any help.

Image

For example, this crash in Taos on June 18 was reported by SIX regional newspapers as a paraglider crash.
It looks like the cops, who were on the scene, gave bad information to the press in a release.
The press really doesn't know the difference. They work under deadlines and are forced to run with the information they have.
But when I explained to Taos News that North Wing only made hang gliders and trikes, they called North Wing, then corrected their headline and story.
Still, despite no deliberate attempt to mislead, five other articles went into the historic Internet record describing a paraglider crash in Taos.
So if you're doing research, you really have to be careful.

ISSAQUAH, Wash. — A hang-glider became stuck in the air when his parachute got caught in trees Wednesday morning, says the King County Sheriff’s Department. The man was in the middle of a tandem jump from the top of Poo Poo Point when he hit a patch of trees, leaving him dangling a few hundred yards from his jumping point. I got stuck in the air, once, so I know what it's like. I did spiral dives for an hour at 11,000 feet under a White Mountain wave cloud without being able to lose any altitude. God, was I sore! My hang glider had aluminium tubing in it, tho... -- RM

FAIL! Moment a man collides with tree while flying a friend's hang-glider

Holding for dear life: A man flying a hang-glider had to be rescued after crashing into a tree in Long Island.

A man out hang-gliding in Long Island Sunday afternoon got stuck in a tree 70 to 100 feet above ground and had to be rescued. Suffolk County police say the incident happened in a densely wooded area near an inlet off Conklin Avenue and Swan River Street in Patchogue at around 4pm.
When firefighters were called to the scene, they saw a man in a New York Giants jersey strapped into a motorized glider holding onto a tree in the brush. ...First responders placed air bags under the tree as a precaution, but were ultimately able to bring the hang-gliding crash victim down the ladder to safety.

Only one reporter corrected his story to reflect it was a paraglider, not a hang glider, that crashed.

Don't be too hard on the press. The BHPGA told them hang gliders and paragliders are the same.
