Choosing the correct footware

Ankle-support boots are very important when your landing gear is nothing but your legs.
Here, a soaring parachutist demonstrates to his new friends how ankle-support boots protected his ankles in a landing after the silly parachute folded up in the air.
Note the splint reinforcing the shattered tibias and fibulas. Applied to a soaring parachutist, a splint serves the much same puropse as an airframe does to a hang glider.

That is the most appropriate hang gliding / paragliding analogy I've ever seen in print.
