Why powered hang gliding is dangerous in Ireland
http://www.irishtimes.com/news/man-died-of-brain-injuries-after-treatment-to-wrist-1.669572
The deceased, a psychiatric nurse, had broken his wrist after his [powered] hang glider crashed on September 27th, 2007. That same day he underwent surgery at 7.50pm.
Because the recovery room at the hospital closed at 8pm daily, he recovered in the theatre before being moved to a bed on a ward shortly afterwards.
Counsel said he was brought to the ward without being properly monitored or given supplemental oxygen and had stopped breathing during the transfer but this went unrecognised by medical staff until he was observed to be turning blue and not responding to stimuli.
By that stage, Mr Devane had suffered an unrecognised respiratory depression resulting in lack of oxygen to the brain and a heart attack, counsel said. He was resuscitated and taken to the intensive care unit and eventually transferred to the Cork hospital. An initial transfer was aborted because equipment in the ambulance to help him breathe either did not work or staff in the ambulance were not trained how to use it.
On October 2nd his family was told he had suffered a severe injury and a good outcome was unlikely. He died on October 6th.

Chuck Wyatt Sheriff's Log
Paraglider Offers Reward for Arrest/Conviction
Friday, Jan 01, 2016
By Chuck Wyatt
http://alpenhornnews.com/paraglider-offers-reward-for-arrestconviction-p6726-172.htm
A paraglider has offered an undisclosed amount of reward for information leading to the identification, arrest, and conviction of the female that terrorized her and destroyed her new paraglider on Sunday, December 13.

The female victim, who requested that any identifying information be withheld due to fears of retaliation, contacted the media after filing a police report in the hope that either one of the witnesses would come forward, or someone might recognize the suspect or her vehicle by the description and contact the police department with that information.

In an interview with The Alpenhorn News, the victim related that Sunday morning between 9:30 and 10:00, she, her instructor, and two other paraglide pilots were driving up to the Marshall Launch site atop of Marshall Peak, overlooking the City of San Bernardino. Generally, the site is easily accessible from Highway 18 in two locations, the closest from the city of San Bernardino being just past the City Limits sign on Highway 18. According to ParaglidingMap.com, the drive from Highway 18 to the launch site takes about ½ hour, and warns that, “Most of the distance is paved, with the last couple of miles being a dirt road in variable condition. Four-wheel drive is not usually necessary, but some amount of clearance is helpful”. The article warns to, “Drive slowly on this road, as it is two-way traffic with blind corners.”

The victim said their instructor was slowly driving up the road, which she described as a trail, when they almost simultaneously heard and saw a female walking down the center of the trail, waving her arms and yelling at them to stop. The paraglide flight instructor, who was driving, immediately stopped the vehicle and they all saw that the woman was walking with four dogs of various sizes, all unleashed. As the female walker approached them, they plainly and distinctly heard that she was yelling the “most foul obscenities” at them. The conclusion the group came to was that the walker felt they had not slowed down or stopped fast enough to suit her. As the woman was walking towards them, she picked up one of the dogs and stared yelling that the dog was blind. As the woman walked past the driver side of their vehicle, they were wondering why a person would have a blind dog on a narrow trail without a leash, but refrained from saying anything to the woman in fear of escalating the problem. After the woman had completely walked past their vehicle with all the dogs, they continued up towards the launch site.

The victim said after arriving at the top, she had removed her new paraglider (wing) from the shipping box and was in the process of spreading the wing out on the ground and connecting the harness. The victim said that her instructor and the other two students were a short distance away setting up their wings when she saw the woman who had been walking the dogs, now driving a vehicle, speeding up the road faster than safe for the road conditions, and stopping near her instructor’s parked vehicle. The woman reportedly just sat by the car for a few moments, staring at the vehicle, and then accelerated towards the victim, then started driving in tight circles around the victim. The victim said she was not sure how fast the woman was driving, but it was fast enough that her tires were throwing rocks and dirt. The woman circled the victim two times in her vehicle, screaming obscenities at her while she was doing so.

Between obscenities, the woman screamed that her husband, “Was a sheriff,” and that they would “get even” with her. The woman also yelled that she (the victim) did not own this place, “I’ll show you,” and “you’ll see what happens to you.” The victim said she was stunned at how much the woman’s face was flushed and contorted with rage and felt that the woman was not just enraged, but was at the point of being dangerous.

By the time the suspect had made finished complete circles’ in her vehicle around the victim, the victim’s instructor had reached her location from the other students to offer any assistance, but that neither of them said anything to the woman as they felt it might further enrage the suspect and would escalate the problem.

While the victim and her instructor were standing by the victim’s wing, the woman backed her car up, spinning the wheel so the vehicle was pointing at them. The victim thought the woman was going to attempt to run them over. The woman suddenly sped towards them, reportedly turning the steering wheel at the last moment, passing the pair but running over the victim’s new wing, destroying it, and then sped off down the trail towards Highway 18.

The victim described the suspect’s vehicle as a white over yellow Toyota FJ Cruiser. The victim said she had seen the vehicle the suspect was driving while they were driving up to the launch site parked in one of the turnouts and that there was an unknown type of sticker or decal in the rear window.

The suspect was described as a white female adult, possibly in her 40’s, five foot five to five foot seven, having dark brown hair, “cut fairly short”, with bangs and parted on the side. The entire time the suspect was wearing dark glasses.

The victim said that when they first encountered the suspect, she had been walking four dogs. One of the dogs appeared to be a large dog, similar to a golden Labrador, the second dog was medium size and she cannot remember the breed, and the other two dogs were small, one possibly a poodle and the second a Chihuahua. All four dogs were tan or golden colored.

When asked if she had been struck by any of the rocks thrown by the suspect’s tires, the victim said that her adrenaline was high at that time and she did not think she had been struck. Later the victim discovered that she had “some pretty good size bruises” on her hips and legs that she could not account for, possibly caused by being struck by some of the rocks.

The victim said a police report was made with the San Bernardino City Police Department, but is afraid that they may be too overworked to give her case much attention, so she is offering a reward for any information that leads to the identification, arrest, and conviction of the suspect. Anyone with any information regarding this incident is urged to contact Police Investigator Nancy DelCid at the San Bernardino City Police Department, (909) 384-5634 regarding case #2015-137024.

The Alpenhorn News contacted the San Bernardino Police Department to obtain any information or updates regarding the incident for use in this article but was shuffled back and forth between divisions before a Lieutenant said that they would not release any information.

One of the two soaring parachutists who died on March 20 was the professional joyrider Peter Bergen.
Bergen had placed 13th in the 1038 km 2015 Red Bull X-Alps race.

He'd be alive right now if he'd been flying a hang glider.
