Fun and Work at Sylmar

Postby Bob Kuczewski » Fri May 27, 2011 11:44 am

I had a nice flight at Sylmar on Wednesday. The traffic was tough on the drive from San Diego, but Joe was kind enough to hold the truck for me.

I flew one of Joe's Falcon 3's. Check out this paint job!!

I flew for over 2 hours in some great thermals ... and some not-so-great knee hangers. The knee hangers were fine for the first hour, but they started hurting my legs during most of the second hour. But not enough to come down. ;)

I stayed over night for a work party on the new gazebo the next morning. I helped with a few of the glider bay concrete pours before a friend invited me for breakfast. Here are a few more photos.

Sylmar is a great club with lots of cooperation. I've been a member since I started flying again in 2004, and I renewed my membership again during this visit. Thanks to all the folks who keep that club running.

Here's some of the news from the front page of the SHGA web site ( http://www.shga.com ):

Headlines
May 26, 2011

Thanks to those who made the the Spring Air festival such a great party! We're especially indebted to Lynn McLaughlin for organization, Katherine and Paul Yardley for all the food and running the barbecue, and Jeff Chipman for scoring.

Thursday Lots of people showed up to help Steve and his son Jed pour concrete into half of the storage bays. Mike Hayden, Mike Knap, Darrel Weaver, Dan Barley, Doug Martins, Rob Burgis, Joey Fresquez III and even Bob Kuczewski showed up early to get dirty! We plan on pouring the rest of the floor on Friday.

Volunteers - On Friday we will pour the other half of the concrete floor. Thanks to all those who came out on Thursday and let's do it again on Friday at 08:00 and then fly. Hopefully the concrete work won't go beyond noon.

The next work after Friday will be on Tuesday, when we start tossing in some dirt into the storage bays and also tying rebar for the upper slab.
