Hey, San Diego City Council, Los Angeles County figured it out - can you? :?: :?:

I wonder if shame will change SD government's position at Torey Pines Glider Port?

At a minimum The SD City Counsel has been made aware of another large(r) California city that is allowing non-U$hPA members to fly on their property. The SD City Counsel members who know anything about the law should realize that LA's stance has the possibility to reveal SD's position as morally/ethically/legally incorrect.

Well said Scott.

The Los Angeles County decision shines light on the unneeded insurance noose that USHPA has hung around the necks of hang gliding pilots for decades now.

It's also worth pointing out that Los Angeles County would not likely have opted for this solution unless they were convinced of the inequity in USHPA's policies. USHPA's expulsion letter to me is ample proof of that inequity, and I believe it spoke volumes.

USHPA no longer has a strategic plan.
All I see is reaction to events without a mature ability to consider the consequences.

The most important stage in any project is the necessity to first sit down and think things through.
All the what if?s.
The USHGA had all that.
But when paragliding took over, the entire strategy was thrown into confusion.
Now what we've got are national organizations that have combined the most dangerous form of parachuting with hang gliding, running in circles like monkeys holding each other's tails, following the example of the monkey they're hanging on to.
This can't end well.
The only thing I'm sure of is that they will blame it on someone else.

There is this one possibility, . . .

I would guess that a high percentage of U$hPA RD's have held their positions - getting re-elected time after time - for 25-35 years. That would put them in the 60 - 75 year old age group (or older). Isn't that the age range when Alzheimer's and senile dementia begin to show up? :wtf: :eh:

The U$hPA's lack of a strategic plan could be linked to "diminished capacity". :shh:

The phrase "We need some fresh minds" could fit the context. But are there enough new, young and capable hang glider pilots out there who could unseat the "Old Boys Club" currently in charge? Hmmmmmm, . . . Would such a group even understand how to make things better? :?:

As Rick says, I also don't think things will end well for the U$hPA. :(

But I'm not so concerned. I'm a member of an organization of anti-U$hPA nut jobs (please note obvious sarcasm) who do have good ideas. And we're also open to even more good/positive ideas, regarding recreational hang gliding - from anyone who wants to offer them up.

I may have discovered part of USHPA's STRATEGIC PLAN:

It involves ditching hang gliding all together
and combining two major sports under one a$$ociation.
I mean, why restrict the corporation to hang gliding
when there are so many lucrative opportunities out there?
It was probably a mistake for the corporation to put so much effort into the little nitch market segment of hang gliding, anyway.
So little money in it.
They should concentrate on real sports with greater popular appeal.

Rick,

Your link has to be translated, also the video wouldn't play for some reason. But after reading the translation, it seems to me that those two sports are - hanging below collapsible canopies and fishing. Would I be correct? :eh:

Certainly old guys with only half a mind can still fish! Well, at least with some supervision - and surely if they're on a boat.

You got it!
This should be popular at Torrey Pines, as well.

It's good to know what the USHGA gave up (us) to become something else (them/USHPA).
It makes the decision easy to let them be them,
and now move on to form a national hang gliding association to let us be us.
