Convert to water sailing after HG lands in water

Postby JoeF » Sun Aug 19, 2018 12:10 pm

Land HG in ocean and then reconfigure wing and rig for water sailing to shore and harbor:
== Inform Coast Guard so that rescue will not be started.
-- Be in radio contact with Coast Guard to inform them in case public calls in.
"Rescue is NOT needed; hang glider deliberately landed in ocean and is converting itself to small water-sailing vessel. All is good."

==Release time? Some systems may have the pilot release into water before landing; then swim over to wing to reconfigure it. Perhaps have long leash so wing does not blow away. Or flare and land with triggering floats; but be ready for full release of pilot as needed.
== Know thy weather and sea state!
== Buddy system.
== Non-corrosive materials in total system.
== Have drinking water maker ready.
== Have food ready.
== Have fishing gear?
== Self-tow in ambient wind for rising again into air; use spoilable water-chute anchor to brace for the ambient-wind kiting to altitude. Then spoil the water chute anchor and pull it up to flying affair.

Anyone may continue the technology and share in this topic thread until fine systems work well.

You could actually do this, Joe, with a couple inflatable Hobi-Cat-like hulls.
Pull the cross tube and use it to join the hulls.
Raise one leading edge as a mast and use the other, with the fabric tied to it, to trail in the water as a rudder.

Helicopter jumps were the most fun. Most military airplanes are traveling around 100mph when you hit the air. You're instantly disoriented for a few seconds from the blast. But helicopter jumps were cool because you could maintain your perspective throughout the jump. I never jumped in water, but our land jumps were otherwise very similar to that video.

Thanks for that walk down memory lane Joe. :thumbup:

Wow!! That really looks like fun. I wonder if anyone's considered setting up a water tow operation anywhere? The waterways are generally more freely available than dry land. So there might be far fewer barriers to entry.
