Your comparison to the "Tandem Right of Way Rule" is exactly right. All traffic on a ridge should pass to the right of oncoming traffic ... just like we do on the road and when walking down a hallway.

Exactly why the "soaring council" must be brought back, to once again properly "guide" the many, many pilots through to, happy and SAFE flying.
"Air ports" have "qualified" professionals as air TRAFFIC controllers for a reason.

Human nature has a bullying side to it.
To my eye, if the sailboat pilot would have been sailing alone, he would have made the right decision. When it becomes a "pay to ride" scenario, then multiple human natures conflict, and "conformation bias"takes over.

That's a very observant comment. There is an aspect of human nature that won't back down when people are watching. Sometimes that's an honorable trait. Other times it's deadly.

Now this ......"out of hand" tandumb flying and watching and instructing and (signing insurance co. Waivers)
Has COMPLETLEY gotten out of control.......(well... it is in control of a millionaire concessionaire ) (what do they know about "air"?.)
The Falcons and Tandumb Falcon handlers are now the ones to keep safe. Hang Gliders and their pilots it seems "just take up too much room" .

Who has "right of way"??? The Torrey Pines Soaring Council "showed the way" 6years ago , now a concessionaire has "musceled" through, and said "MAKE WAY".....or else.
(Disbanned the soaring council and got a free lease from the "Tippers" at "city council")

Do the Birds need a "permit" to soar? Or an insurance agent? They are birds of prey ...by the way. Watch out for "discrimination" lawsuits from the Ravens and the Gooniebirds, (and don't forget the "Puffin" and the " Tiny Hawk" .....ha...). wanting a piece of the action.

Court cases and lawsuits are looming. (And the public gets its "two minutes of fame" )

Private messages and funds, from "citizens" , and "votes", are the only "wild Card". Joe said "risk, and dig deep". We gotta be "Wild".

They should shut down the glider port for a day, everybody "take a breath" , use our imaginations , and let this music and visual sink in. I am already imagining a bigger version of "The Eagle" so Eddie can climb right in.
I can also "imagine" a Paul MacCready day, or week, in August, where "state of the art" flying models can be enjoyed by young and old alike, and where Homage is given to this truly great human being.
Associations and bureaucracies have taken some of the free spirits out of "playfully jumping into the air". Taking a day or two a week to "relax and remember" how it really is Re-Creation, and how our children and grandchildren
Look "up" to us.
