Another review of the cases and deaths.

Once again, the surge of recent cases dwarfs the initial cases bump. But the deaths per case is many times less than that early bump. Today's COVID is many times less deadly than it was originally. This is likely a consequence of improved immunity, improved treatment, and the passing of those most at risk of death.

Here are the laterst updates from: https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/us/:

That web site also provides numerical values for any point in those curves. I've used that feature to get the numeric values from the peaks of cases and deaths from the peak in April of 2020 and the recent peak in September of 2021:

Peaks from April of 2020 showing 30,108 cases and 2,256 deaths:

Cases_2020_04_Peak.png

Deaths_2020_04_Peak.png
Deaths_2020_04_Peak.png (94.76 KiB) Viewed 2307 times

Peaks from September 2021 showing 163,949 cases and 1,998 deaths:

Cases_2021_09_Peak.png
Cases_2021_09_Peak.png (83.41 KiB) Viewed 2307 times

Deaths_2021_09_Peak.png
Deaths_2021_09_Peak.png (84.16 KiB) Viewed 2307 times

While these numbers may not be the exact peaks, they are close enough for the following analysis:

The April 2020 peaks show about 30,108 cases and 2,256 deaths. That's about 1 death for every 13.35 cases.

The September 2021 peaks show about 163,949 cases and 1,998 deaths. That's about 1 death for every 82.05 cases.

In other words, the virus is about 6 times less deadly to our population today than it was when the pandemic first started. This is likely due to vaccinations, natural immunity, better treatment, and the earlier deaths of those most vulnerable.

This graph shows both cases and deaths (at different scales) taken from the previous two images:

If you compare the ratio of deaths per case at the first peak in May of 2020 to the ratio of deaths per case today, you'll find that there are about 20 times fewer deaths per case today than at that early peak.

Today, the Supreme Court of the United States struck down the Biden administration's COVID vaccine mandate for businesses with more than 100 employees. The Supreme Court's decision was 6 to 3 with President Trump's appointmentees making the difference.

Here's the latest graph of cases in the United States:

Cases.png
Cases.png (85.79 KiB) Viewed 2198 times

That spike on the right would be extremely alarming if not compared to the deaths below:

Deaths.png
Deaths.png (93.24 KiB) Viewed 2198 times

As you can see here, that dramatic spike in cases has not translated to a spike in deaths.
