One year later, myself and my whole graduating class of boys (221) were "drafted" without numbers, and sent to Vietnam. It happened to almost 100,000, 1964 graduating male students all across the country.
In fun, I new LBJ had drafted us because, me and my friends had snuck by the Marine MP's, with their jeeps and rifles, into "Trestles" (Camp Pendleton), on three different occasions to surf some of the best waves on the coast. With only 3 or 4 of us out all day, and the MP's yelling at us, they were pissed. The ocean was "public" but the beach was Camp Pendleton. Years later when they opened up the beaches to the public, I didn't surf there any more, "The Thrill Was Gone" and it was way too crowded anyway.
