R.I.P. to Airmen !!! Our leaders went soft on protecting our pilots. You raised the cost of free flight for personal power & profit.
For what God gave Us freely, you charge us to Launch hold our park hostage, your a shame to all Earthling that dream of a flight.
You shall reap what you sow, You have lost many a pilot due to your selfish control, disrespecting the safety of others and there right to freeflight.
This, what you have dont is a sin to mankind. Its Time for a change, for all that may wonder and dream of a flight.. . .

Amen .......................... The Eagle

Moderator's Note: Several posts to this topic have been moved
to a new topic with permission of the original poster.

A number of reports were filed that posts were drifting from the original topic of "Hero Hawks". It's well known that topics on discussion forums do wander, and that often makes moderation decisions difficult. Fortunately, in this case, I was able to contact Craig, and he was very agreeable to splitting his posts into another topic. Thanks Craig, your cooperation is very welcome by this battle weary moderator. You are a hero to me for being so agreeable!!

It took a sail plane, hang glider pilot to figure out how to "tip stall", and "flat turn" the Condor, to win the prize in 1977.

I rated Paul MacCready a H-a-million........ Jack Lambie... ?? We'll have to ask Joe.

A "Hero Hawk"? What do y'all think?

Any comments about Owens Valley flying?

The term "hero" can have multiple interpretations. I started the topic with this particular definition:

Bob Kuczewski wrote:This topic is dedicated to those who've put themselves
at risk for the benefit of others. That's the definition of a hero.

I agree with the "H-a-million" rating, but I'm not as sure about the "hero" designation.

We all do somewhat dangerous things (like driving a car) because we want to do those things for our own benefit. I personally feel that hero status should require doing something dangerous for the explicit purpose of assisting someone else who is in danger. The classic example is entering a burning building to rescue someone else. But I don't think the danger has to be physical. For example, being banned from posting on a popular web site isn't a physical danger, but it can be very painful to be separated from your friends. People who are willing to take that risk to speak up for others fit my definition of "hero".

This "Hero Hawks" topic was started in 2018, but there were many Hero Hawks before that time. This is Scott Wise from 2016:

Maybe another kind of hero, but not running into a burning building, is one who, doesn't speak up in the meda media until, they get their screens and device world together, and their written word.
And then they, "blast" the truth at them,
they do it for us, as Americans.
It's like they are rushing into burning buildings to save books and words.
Here is a poster boy, but there are many others.

I know that I should not lament the issue with our Parks up here in Northern California. But it seems to Me from reading the posts by Pilots who launch from "YOUR PARKS". It seems that we all have a ongoing case of; THE TAIL WAGGING THE DOG. I mean up here the Rangers have totally lost track of Who They are, or who We as Tax Paying Citizens Own the Parks, "WE ARE THEIR EMPLOYERS" . They work for Us. They are Our Employes. For Collectively we own the Parks. I really do not know what can be done Collectively can be done to rectify this situation. Also I really do not know what I can do that would have a positive outcome. Do any of You have any good Ideas?

Each park probably has city and state boards and councils who run the show, and they control any leasing for profit sites. They are a hard nut to crack, but more and more people are standing up (with technology) like "citizen" Journalists, to city councils and school boards and organizing. Every bit of info is important to them. They are exposing some really bad actors, and getting laws passed, slow but sure.
Dockweiler association has a perfect model for any HG site, why don't more places do that? Your trip down there will be a celebration.

It still ticks me off that other recreational activity at
Dockweiler Beach doesn’t have to sign anything.
There is now a negotiated precedent that regained
most but not every right while being there.

You're right Bill (as usual). It shows how far we've slid to get to the point where we're tickled pink to be jumping through more hoops than any other activity.

But progress is progress, and the one page, one time, free Dockweiler waiver is a lot better than the 10 pound USHPA SOP nightmare, and the $100+ annual renewal fee, and the castration of your vocal cords ... that U$HPA requires.
