See David Cronk's simple "wingtip spoilers" on one beautiful "Kite", starting at 25:01
He is a true pioneer, but that's the way it was in SoCal back in the 60's and 70's. "The Perfect Storm".
Wasn't it Frank?

All the best;

Hang Gliding.
Skate Boarding.
Surfing.. the whole Calif. coast down to Ensenada and Hussong's Cantina.
Golfing your ball.
Music...Dick Dale, The Righteous Brothers.
Crazy Muscle Cars.
Street Racing and Sunday, Sunday, Sunday, at Lions Drag Strip.
Performance shops with dyno's.
Cruzing... (Bob's Big Boy, McDonalds, A & W, The Witch Stand, Sunset Strip, Tiny Naylors).
Sailing ..to Twin Harbors Catalina in one rough channel.
Roller Coasters...the "Nu-Pike" Cyclone Racer.
Fishing
Mechanics
Pilots
Engineers
Aircraft Companies
Art Center
Stewardesses.. (go Manhattan Beach)
schools ..(parkway elementary school, right across from Torrance Beach parking lot, 1957 to 1960 where Cronk and I graduated)

girlfriends (although the water was way too cold for them, so we had the ocean all to ourselves)

and of course the "Moms" and dads who put up with us, we were bums.
all on this tiny dot on Planet Earth.

Modern Hang Gliding,.. perfect.

It was the perfect storm until LBJ drafted us in 1964, and sent us all to Vietnam. Uck..but some how we survived.
Our, "surfer" bodies adapted well I suppose.

That was cool, looking back at how those Guys and Gals Flew their Standards, I have a Question: Were Standards as Dangerous an Idea as to how to get into the Air as a ParaGlider is today?

NO, and F**K No, my H0pinion.

Gliders have an elegant history in pictures and music, and Modern Hang Gliding too. :salute: :D :) ;)
Sky Surfing was fun, fun, fun, and "hang loose", "Self Soar, and just "Boss and bitchen", and a glider is a glider.
PG-ing came 20 years later and it's un comparable,
One is a, 'sometimes' floating and spinning machine, and pilot error is pilot error.
The other is not

but you wouldn't know it from their "advertising" and coverup tactics.
I ramble.

Paragliders have a ??? History.

Thanks for that post Craig. Seeing "Playground in the Sky" again gave me the idea to show the Torrey Pines cuts from that 1977 film to the City Council. As a refresher, the Air California Adventure lease to David Jebb's company was signed in 1998. That was 22 years after the making of that film. I make that point because I've often heard people claiming that there wouldn't be any flying at Torrey Pines without them. I think the film proves otherwise.

Here's the City Council video showing my selected Torrey clips from "Playground in the Sky":
