Hoop matters for HG

 Motivation: Fun, safety, tiny packing, HG-design options, ...
 Motivation: The torus, the ring, the circle, the disk seem to some to be involving an elementary form type that might bless HG even more than it has up to this time.

Allow "hoop" to include not only circular constructs, but elliptical or even irregular shapes of closed area. Be ready to extend what is found regarding circular hoops to non-circular hoops. Let the triangle be a "hoop" in that it has a perimeter enclosing a closed area; hence let a square or rectangle or polygon be hoops. Find such polygons in extant hang gliders and wonder about replacing the scene with a circular hoop or elliptical hoop.

This discussion thread invites a development of hoop technology with the aim of developing uses of hoops in hang gliders.
A hoop might be a regular ring or irregular. Circular-like or oval-like. A first level of concern regards convex hoops, but someone may develop uses for hoops that are with concave sections. Small or large hoops may be studied. Sectioning a hoop for packing can be studied. Stabilizing the shape of a hoop in a HG may be studied; perhaps one or more rigging posts integrated with a hoop subassembly will bring assets to a HG. And face planar and non-planar hoops. Face foldable hoops and sectional hoops. Small or large. Rigid? Flexible? Consider stiffness levels for hoops. Selecting best materials according to the use of hoop in a HG. Historical uses of hoops in HGs? Potential uses of hoops in HGs? Hoop failure modes? Experiences with HG-involved hoops? Making hoops? Weaving hoops? Filling hoops? Netting hoops? Socking hoops? Using string complexes in hoops to afford lighter-sail material for flying a HG?

Once incorporating a hoop into a HG, consider color, lighting, scaling, cost, material option, safety, etc.

Uses of hoops in a HG? Winglets? Control rudders? Tail pieces? Full sided wings? Pilot hold? Airfoil shapers? Wing stuffers? Wheels? Skids? Reels? KP? QP? Wing tipping? Reflexing? Substitute for TCF? Outrigger hoop? Wing-ribbing? Wing framing? BEF010ab? BEF007? BEF008? Bumpers? Safe-Splat? High-Hat? :?:

This was a flexible hoop fastened from willow that sat in front of the pillow, reducing the impact in the event of a crash.
On one occasion, this saved his life when his glider stalled and nosedived toward the earth.

Have a set of ring hoops, say 21 hoops.

If those hoops or rings are all the same diameter, then those hoops might stack one upon another to form a collection that might look like a circular cylinder or barrel without a top or bottom. One might store other parts of a hang glider in the interior cavity of such a stack of hoops. If the width of the hoops was 1/2 inch, then the stack would be 10 1/2 inch high.

Consider instead that the 21 rings were of nestable diameters with 11 hoops forming one nest and 10 hoops forming the second nest. Then stack the two nests for a stack of 1 inch, assuming the hoops were 1/2" of width. The cavity of such a stack of two nests would be the inside diameter of the smallest of the tapered diameters. The cavity would could hold some small hang glider parts.

One nest of hoops? Then choose every other hoop for left wing and the other remaining hoops for the right wing. Tote pack that has just one concentric nest of hoops, but use all the hoops for slight asymmetry in a hang glider for helping to maintain camber in the airfoils of the left and right wings. This note may be part of the development notes for getting TPHGs (tiny packed hang gliders).
