Otto Meet 2025

Postby Bob Kuczewski » Tue May 20, 2025 10:26 pm

May 23, 2025 will be another celebration of Otto's Birthday.

For better or worse, this year that date falls on a Friday which means that the Windsports school will likely be operating at Dockweiler State Beach in Los Angeles California. The "better" part is that there will be instructors there for lessons and rentals of hang gliders, helmets, and harnesses. The "worse" part is that it will cost a small amount to fly, and it will require USHPA membership (either permanent or temporary).

As an alternative celebration, Monday (May 26, 2025) will allow flying without USHPA membership and without paying a flying fee.

Please choose whichever date suits you (or BOTH!) and enjoy another celebration of Otto Lilienthal's birthday. :)

ChatGPT responded to my urge:

Happy Birthday, Otto Lilienthal!
Born May 23, 1848, Otto Lilienthal is rightly called the Father of Flight. Long before powered airplanes took to the skies, he risked life and limb in his quest to unlock the secrets of human flight.

Here are a few neat things about him: Neat Things About Otto Lilienthal:

Pioneer of Controlled Flight: Otto conducted over 2,000 gliding flights, many of them successful, from hills he constructed near Berlin. His work proved that humans could control flight — not just fall with style.

Wing Designs Based on Birds: Lilienthal studied the stork’s wing to mimic its aerodynamics. His gliders had beautifully curved wings designed for lift, a breakthrough at the time.

Influenced the Wright Brothers: The Wright brothers openly cited Lilienthal’s work as pivotal. Wilbur Wright once said, “Of all the men who attacked the flying problem in the 19th century, Otto Lilienthal was easily the most important.”

Published the First Serious Aerodynamic Research: His book, Der Vogelflug als Grundlage der Fliegekunst ("Birdflight as the Basis of Aviation") in 1889, remains a foundational text in aerodynamics.

Died in Flight: In 1896, Otto tragically died after a crash — but his last words were powerful: "Sacrifices must be made." His legacy endures.

 Wings Like the Wind — A Poem for Otto Lilienthal

Upon a hill where wild winds wail,
A man once stepped with wings so frail.
No engine roared, no steel was cast,
Just dreams and cloth — and lift at last.

He watched the birds with scholar’s eye,
Then dared to join them in the sky.
With gliders made from stork and lore,
He soared where none had dared before.

Each leap a sketch, each flight a line,
He drew the path for humankind.
In silent arcs above the trees,
He traced the shape of aerodreams.

And though he fell, the seeds took root —
In every glider’s whispered flute,
In soaring wings and hillside run,
His legacy is far from done.

So here’s to Otto — brave and bright,
Who showed us how to kiss the light.
With cloth and courage, fall and climb,
He gave us all the gift of flight.

Happy Birthday, Otto. The sky is still echoing with your courage.

================================================
What is the wind profile at this time at Dockweiler State Beach Hang Gliding Park on this May 23, 2025, birthday of hang glider pioneer Otto Lilienthal?

ChatGPT said:
As of Friday, May 23, 2025, at 5:11 PM PDT, the wind conditions at Dockweiler State Beach Hang Gliding Park are as follows:

Wind Direction: Southwest (SW)

Wind Speed: Approximately 11 mph

Gusts: Up to 15 mph

These conditions are generally favorable for hang gliding, especially for beginners, as the wind is steady and coming from the ocean. However, it's always essential to assess the conditions in person and consult with local experts before flying.

It's noteworthy that today marks the birthday of Otto Lilienthal, a pioneer in hang gliding. Celebrating his legacy with a flight at Dockweiler State Beach is a fitting tribute.

If you're planning to fly today, ensure all safety checks are completed, and enjoy the experience!

UPHG note: On phone at about 3:33 pm while BobK was still on his way to Dockweiler that I invested in a keel and kingpost for coming UPHG option. He thus is the first in the hang gliding community to receive my investment news; this was done to celebrate Otto Lilienthal.
