The bottom of the Hang Gliding history page shows a picture of a paraglider along with the link to the paragliding history page:

The bottom of the Paragliding history page shows only a link to the hang gliding history page (no picture). USHPA couldn't find a historic hang glider picture to put beside the link?

Also note that the paragliding history page has a link to "find a school or instructor". Why isn't there a similar link anywhere on the hang gliding history page?
 
 
Summary: There's a picture of a paraglider on the hang gliding history page, but no picture of a hang glider on the paragliding history page. There's a link to take lessons on the paragliding page, but no link to take lessons on the hang gliding page.

People talk about the sport of hang gliding dying. It's not dying. It's being murdered. By the U$hPA.

Carefully check out the words in this article and see how the word "paragliding" got it's start when Pete Brock retired, and an international company was formed, and the Brock Redtail, the UP Dragonfly, Condor, Comet, and TRX, are impossible to find in their advertising history.
As a side note, Mr. Brock never talked about his son's (Hal) hang gliding accident in Aspen on July 18th 1975 which may have totally lessoned his love for the sport. Pete Brock said that soaring a hang glider was way more exciting than driving a race car.
We saw Hal Brock the week before, he died, when he came to Telluride and walked his glider to the top of Ajax, along a treacherous ridge line, set it up, waited till the wind was right, but it never was, so he folded it up and walked back to town...alone. RIP Hal.
Another side note, John Heiney is soo much more than a "looping star".

In the mid 80's, the words Hang Gliding and Paragliding started being used in the same sentence and the same paragraph, over and over and over again, until they became synonymous. Rick said that hang gliding was being murdered, but also, the word hang gliding was/is being "craftily" stolen.
We've got to "steel it back"... Paragliding is parachute gliding by riders of parachutes, and has no business in Hang Gliding History.

I know that you've lost something you've loved through the corruption in the San Diego City government regarding the Gliderport. I know that terrible rotten things have been done to you. I know that USHPA and the SDHGPA have done nothing to protect your rights. But please keep you eye on the true source of that abuse. Thanks Ernie.

I was there when "hot dodgers", flooded into, surfing, skiing, Hang Gliding, and government.

Not withstanding anything about Bob and Ernie on MY "Purview The Contrasts" site, this is a story that I experienced first hand because I was physically there during these events in history.

I grew up, "Longboard", no wetsuit, surfing from 1953 to 1969 and then, wetsuit clad "short boarders" flooded into our once favorite breaks, and said, "get out of the way".

Then in 1971,
I started, "Alpine Skiing" in Telluride Colorado, and in 1984, the "hiking booted" snow boarders flooded into our favorite ski runs and said, "get out of the way".

Then in 1972,
"Hang Gliding" started in Telluride, and in 1990 the. "laundry bag" paragliders flooded into our favorite launch sites and said, "get out of the way".

Then in 1995,
the, so called "Non-Profit" USHPA, flooded into our favorite Historic Torrey Pines State Park, and said, "get out of the way".

Then in 2008,
Barak Husain Obama invited the, "Muslim Brotherhood" into the Oval Office, and radical Muslims flooded into our favorite places, and said, "get out of the way".

Then in 2009,
the Obamas' sent in their, "Trans-Terrorists", and they flooded into our favorite bathrooms, and said, "get out of our way'.

Then in 2020,
the Obama/Biden "Bunch", flooded into our favorite government sites, and said, "get out of the way".

Then in 2021,
the, so called "immigrants", flooded into our favorite USA sites, and said, "get out of the way".

Then in 2023,
the "spiritual war" started again, and the terrorists flooded into Israel and said, "get out of the way".

Do you see a pattern here ?

Here is the first part of a great piece by, Rob Wenban:

"So you've forgotten all the lessons about landing set up, you've misjudged the wind direction, you've stalled in the final turn...you're going in, an up-close and personal meeting with Mother Nature, you're about to crash, so, what now hot shot ?

You have a death-grip on the uprights, your body is rigid, your eyes are big and your pants are getting warm and sticky. As the glider plows into the ground you swing through the A frame. The torsional stresses on your humerus exceed manufactures' specs, the bone twists and snaps with a spiral fracture. That's going to need surgery, plates, screws, time off work and time away from flying. Your face slams into the ground just before the keel smacks down on the back of your head, cracking your stupid bicycle helmet, and your head, like an egg.

This article is not about avoidance. At this point you've already failed that class. I'm assuming that you've heard it all before. You've probably even given lots of advice to newbies about avoidance, but somehow you've still managed to do what we've all done at some point.
You've reached the point of no return.........

This is my contrast about "The Center of Gravity".

A "nose heavy" airplane is hard to fly.....
A "tail heavy" airplane, flies ......
ONCE.



One of the first things taught to me about "flying" is C/G , L/D & AOA,
the other thing my dad said to me as we were climbing out at best rate, "there is one thing you have to learn to be a good pilot",
what's that dad? (power-on stall),
"How Not to Throw Up".

Over the years, many things, and people, have "attached" to wings, But there are very basic things to be learned, no matter what.

If your C/G changes to the rear (as if the unsecured baggage slides to the rear on take off) your "wing" has "crashed in mid air", and only a good pilot and a good wing will "survive". If exactly the same plane and pilot take off with a "nose heavy" C/G, it will " fly", although at least much harder to "fly". Speed over the wing is always the "compensator". As a pilot of a "wing", I always knew and "felt" exactly where my C/G was, everything was coordinated. It always remained the same because "I made it so". I could "scare my wing" once in awhile, but it always knew how to survive on its own with out my help. Because I could " always maintain my shape", I knew in my heart that my "pilot" had the confidence to "always" be able to "fly me".
From my ®HangGlider point of view, my pilot is attached to me in the "one perfect place". From a "parasailer" point of view, my "flyer" is attached to me in so many places, I'm not ever quite sure exactly where they want my C/G to be, the baggage is always moving around, And then when I do find it, they change it again, it drives me crazy. I really do want to fly fast and straight sometimes, but to do that, requires (at ALL times), a "stable well built wing", AND a "pilot" who "dares to follow my lead".
My contrast is "uncoordinated" over "coordinated"
My contrast of "Para" over "Pilot" is this:
"Para" is constantly working hard, and controlling the shape of his "constantly changing shaped" wing, a Pilot of a ®HangGlider is following the lead of his "constant shaped" wing (that he built and tested,. for arguments sake), and the trust built up over many many flights is SOLID
Another "contrast" is "trim". From a wings point of view, it my pilot puts me
Into "good trim" (I start out every day in good trim thank you very much) a smooth flight is had. If my pilot doesn't know me that well (because I do have temper tantrums once in awhile) and is always "searching" for trim, a smooth flight is a "sometimes" thing.
In simplistic ®HG terms I Am an "Always" wing, with an "Always" pilot.
In simplistic ®Para terms, I am a "sometimes" wing, with a "sometimes" pilot.

"Flying" is one thing, but "choice" of wings for "your" conditions is something that may stay with you over your whole life. There are so many "wings" in our lives to choose from.
I would suggest the "nose heavy wing" that you can "free fly", over the "tail heavy" wing , which takes "constant control",...... any day.

And if I was an insurance company, I would choose to insure an "always" wing over a "sometimes" wing, and charge "way" more for the "latter".
