Anyone out Yuma way?

Postby Ground Slammer » Wed Nov 26, 2025 2:16 pm

Hey I have my 69th birthday coming soon and in celebration of such event I want to go ground skimming.I don't know if I'll have all ready right on time . I have been gifted a UP Condor for the occasion and I can use Imperial Dunes for it if I wanted.. But it would be prudent to seek the help and advice of locals. Anyone out Yuma way?

I'm in San Diego about 3 hours from Yuma. Where are the Imperial Dunes? I might be able to make the trip. Please send me a private message (PM).

Imperial Dunes is just North of I 8 and East of Brawley on 78. It is a National Recreation Area administratored by BLM. The southern end of the dunes cross I 8 around the Sand Hills rest area . 153 miles east of SD

Thanks. That's roughly half way between us. I replied to your PM. Let's discuss it off-line.

Hello GroundSlammer!!

Thanks for the hour long phone call. :)    It was great to hear about your long history in the sport. I always feel humbled to meet people with such rich history in hang gliding.

I hope you'll be able to make it to Dockweiler sometime soon. Here's a link to the waiver topic on the Friends of Dockweiler Club site:

      https://ushawks.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=44&t=2865

I think you already have the waiver, but I wanted to add the link just in case. As I mentioned on the phone, it sometimes takes a while to get that back from Beaches and Harbors, so please send it in as soon as possible.

Also, here's the Catherine Chen Otto Meet video that I mentioned on the phone. It shows how easy it is to make a first flight at Dockweiler in a Condor 330:

Thanks again for the phone call. Please call or post any time.        :salute:

By the way, this video features lots of dune flying in the early portions:

The video is a bit long at nearly 40 minutes, but it plays very well at 2x speed. :D :!:
