Chris McKeon recently brought up the issue of bylaws in another topic (thanks Chris!!). So I'm posting here to revive this topic from nearly a decade ago.

In my first post to this topic I mentioned the Torrey Hawks bylaws. Here's a suggested adaptation of those bylaws for the U.S. Hawks:

U.S. Hawks Mission Statement and By-Laws

U.S. Hawks Mission Statement:

The U.S. Hawks Hang Gliding Association is dedicated to promoting, protecting and serving the recreational sport of Hang Gliding in the United States.

U.S. Hawks By-Laws:

  • Article I - Name
The name of the organization shall be the U.S. Hawks Hang Gliding Association. The organization may also be known as the United States Hawks Hang Gliding Association or simply (and most commonly) as the U.S. Hawks. The organization's web site shall be ushawks..org.

  • Article II - Purpose
The U.S. Hawks Hang Gliding Association is dedicated to promoting, protecting and serving the recreational sport of Hang Gliding in the United States.

  • Article III - Membership
The membership of the U.S. Hawks Hang Gliding Association shall consist of individuals whose applications for membership have been accepted by the association. Memberships shall be managed through the organization's web site (ushawks.org) with advice from the U.S. Hawks Advisory Board.

  • Article IV - Advisory Board
The the U.S. Hawks Hawks shall maintain an Advisory Board of Directors. The Advisory Board will meet continually through the U.S. Hawks web site (ushawks.org). New members to the Advisory Board may be added with a majority vote of the existing Advisory Board.

  • Article V - Meetings
The U.S. Hawks Advisory Board Members and regular Members may meet continually via the organization's web site. There shall be a dedicated section of the web site for Advisory Board communications.

  • Article VI - Minutes and Records
The history of posts to the U.S. Hawks forum (at ushawks.org) shall form a complete record of all meetings and actions.

  • Article VII - Parlimentary Authority
The U.S. Hawks on-line meetings shall be guided by Robert's Rules of Order as appropriate for on-line meetings.

  • Article VIII - Amendments
Amendments to these By-Laws may be made with a two-thirds vote of the Advisory Board.

These are just intended to get us talking and not as an actual proposal yet. All thoughts are welcome.

Article II, Should we describe what we mean when we say or write, Hang Glider? ( Negative load standards recommended by HGMA? or maybe what hang glider is not? Or Language that if it had been in place for the old USHGA would have stopped a take over of USHGA.)
Article IV, Should a hang rating be required for members on the Advisory Board? (an additional firewall to stave off a takeover.)
Article VII, Check spelling of Parlimentary . (Parliamentary).
Article VIII, Is the current wording tough enough?

This might be too hard to define concisely. I am anticipating a companion set of "Standard Operating Procedures" where this kind of distinction could be made. How is that?

I like this idea. How about a rating requirement of "Hawk 3" or equivalent?

Bill Cummings wrote:Article VII, Check spelling of Parlimentary . (Parliamentary).

Thanks!!

I agree. How about 3/4?

Here's an update with most of Bill's suggestions:
