As with any new technical endeavour, there were a lot of dreamers, cranks and loonies as well as entrepreneurs and engineers involved in the development of flight. And some of these lived south of the Equator.

Lawrence Hargrave was there at the birth of flight and can lay claim to almost all of the epithets above.
