Thanks again for posting this Margie!!!

billcummings wrote:Three minutes isn’t much time. It could fall within the council meetings procedure that the person after you (a HG person) picks up the narrative right where you left off to hit the council with a total of six minutes. Three people would give you nine minutes and so on. But alas, finding people willing to carry the load like you have are difficult to find.

They also limit it to 3 minutes per group, so we'd end up with 1 minute per person. :|

billcummings wrote:A pregnant pause to allow statements to sink in can be quite powerful. Like right after you addressed Sherri Lightner would have been a good time for a pause. Silence then would allow the focus on Sherry to seem more profound than noise. It would allow the attention on her to be excruciatingly intolerable for someone whose image is what will keep or remove her from the council.

This is a great idea, and I'll try to work it into my next speech!! Bill you're my new speaking coach. ;)

For this week at the San Diego City Council, Bob K tackles the issue of RCs crashing into pilots - in the air! Of course, the problem is not really the RCs, but the way the Soaring Council is put together - a little heavy in one area - see for yourself...

Very good presentation Bob, at the 10-15-2013 San Diego Council meeting.

It looks like the cameraman’s repetitive need for reminders to focus on your slides every single time you are at the podium is an effort to strip time from your three minutes allowable. (Few slides were shown yet again. 4 out of 6?)

If you have to constantly scold the cameraman every single time at the podium he has successfully subtracted from your allotted three minutes.

Thanks to Margie this subterfuge is not going unnoticed by us, the remote viewers, that don’t have the time to watch a whole council meeting at far off San Diego.
Is this cameraman a volunteer or is he/she paid by the City of San Diego?

I don’t think anyone in the audience failed to notice the moment that you focused attention on Sherri for her poor work performance. (Even I was squirming and embarrassed during the awkward moment of silence.) :shifty:  - (Good job Bob. I‘m still tittering with a smile on my face.)
Thanks again Margie

Ditto. Margie takes her time every week to download and sift through a few hours of video so she can pull out and post the 3 minutes related to our sport. Big thanks to Margie!!

Me too!! I was doing my best to follow your advice, but it was awkward for me to stand there in silence. I held it for as long as I could trying to remember the advice of my speaking coach (that would be you, Bill). :)

Actually, it was 4 out of 13 (including my intro). You can see me raising my arm with the remote control to advance each slide (that's probably a left-over habit from television remotes because I think the council use a radio-frequency control rather than a "line of sight" infrared control ... so I really don't need to point). But you're right that I should not have to use my time admonishing the cameraman (a paid city employee) to show my slides. But there was another break-through during this presentation. I've noticed that the City uses a fairly large "footer" banner which covers up a good portion of my slides. I've seen other cases (when the City presents, for example) where they don't add that footer so the entire slide can be seen. It turns out that in this case, they did drop the footer for a bit, which proves that it is discretionary, and that's now something else that I can - and will - request.

Thanks Bill. That was due to your good coaching!! And thanks especially for your post. The City leaders would like to portray all public speakers as "lone kooks" to discredit them. When you watch the council and take the time to post, you're letting people know that you're watching and you're seeing what they're doing. That's what makes them more nervous than my speech to an empty auditorium.    ;)

Bill, your coaching suggestions are super. If you have any more suggestions, please post or send them personally as you find appropriate.

BAN THE BANNER!
Bob your point and click for changing slides is an additional signal to the home viewers that another slide is being put up. I think that is a good habit to be in.
You might even say, “Next slide.” - as you are pointing and clicking.

The TV Council banner is quite annoying. I covers a little over 20% of the available screen. If people tune into the City of San Diego channel at the appropriate time it should be assumed by anyone that everyone knows where the scene has originated from.

If the near full time banner is City policy you will probably have to contact “The City of San Diego’s Department of Redundancy Department”, to try and change the policy.

Showing only four out of thirteen slides is close to 31% of the slides that the television viewing audience did not get to see. (The technician is over paid.)

Can you adjust your text to appear in the upper 80% of the slide and in the lower 20% in bold print put something like, “This is happening during Sherri Lightner’s watch!” Or, “The oversight purview of Sherri Lightner!”

If the slide is shown at home with the banner up, covering the lower 20%, With Sherri’s name there, it will look like they are intentionally trying to cover up for Sherri Lightner. The lower bold print should just possibly be able to be read through the banner.
Putting the banner up will make the technician look as though some attempt at obfuscation is in the works. (A suggestion of a cover up.)

If they want to play mean - join them. It will only draw a larger viewing audience.
(People will tune in if they know a councilor is about to get her weekly spanking.)

Great point. I never thought of that aspect!!!

Now that is diabolically ... brilliant!! :!: :o

I may start with a simple verbal request to show the slides without any banner and see what happens. If that doesn't work, then I will have tried to be nice first (my usual policy .. despite what some folks will say).

By the way, I attended one of the Mayoral Debates tonight and spoke with a few of the candidates before and after the event. I'm starting to get some commitments about correcting this ... while they're still looking for votes.

Thanks Margie!! The City didn't show a single slide despite my request, so here they are:

If you click the "Play" triangle on the video just as the slides count down to white (3,2,1,white), the slides will be more or less synchronized with the presentation (your mileage may vary).

Of course I was disappointed that they didn't show a single slide. On the other hand, it's hard to get better evidence of the CORRUPTION in the City. This is another example where I'm clearly asking the City to show my slides so the public can see what's going on ... and the City is covering it up.

I think their blatant cover-up is better proof of corruption than even my best slides!

And yet another weekly visit to the San Diego City Council - and again, no viewing of the slides. :?

Here's an animated GIF of Bob's slides:
