Forecast for the Weekend Nov. 22-24

Postby RobinHastings » Thu Nov 21, 2013 9:50 am

The forecast: Stormy. This may not be a good one for hang gliding and paragliding in our Southwest New Mexico area. A strong low pressure cell is going to travel slowly across the state, starting Friday. Cold temperatures will be coming down on Friday evening, too. This system will drag up some moisture from the Gulf of California and bring some rain and snow to the state starting Friday, along with strong winds. There will be a huge gradient to those winds. Down low, they're forecast to be strong east and southeast all weekend, finally tailing off on Sunday evening. Up higher, around 10,000-12,000 ft MSL, the winds will be mostly strong south. If you just have to get into the air somehow, then Anapra may be your ticket for the weekend, while the east winds blow. Otherwise, I think we'd better just wait for something better to come along. Despite this gloomy outlook, have a great Thanksgiving, everyone! I am so thankful for what I have (including my airtime).

Bill, did you really read that?

:srofl:

We've obviously been attacked by someone who distributed the answers to our registration questions. So I'm temporarily requiring a phone call before registering new users. That should solve the problem.

Please feel free to call me (as Bill did - THANKS!) to let me know if you see any suspicious stuff going on in the forum. This is our neighborhood, and we're all on the neighborhood watch committee.

Update on the attack

Postby Bob Kuczewski » Fri Nov 22, 2013 1:13 pm

Update: Here's the list of locations from around the world where hang glider pilots have suddenly flocked to the US Hawks:

  • Senegal
  • Iraq
  • Tajikistan
  • Belarus
  • Russia
  • Mozambique
  • Japan
  • The Bahamas
  • Estonia
  • Sri Lanka
  • Mongolia
  • Philippines
  • Netherlands Antilles
  • El Salvador
  • Cape Ver
  • Malawi
  • Ukraine
  • Paraguay
  • Czech Republic
  • Ukraina
  • Bahrain
  • Costa Rica
  • Norfolk Island

:srofl:

I've posted a complete list of these new "members" in the topic titled: "Hawks Forum Attacked November 21,22, 2013" in the forum at Board_index/U.S._Hawks_Association/Building_the_US_Hawks. I've looked over all the names there, and I think they're all spammers, but if you see a name that looks like it might be a real person (especially from your club), please let me know and I'll contact them via email to be sure we didn't miss any real people. Thanks.

I also apologize that the one bad post (above) and the subsequent discussion about spamming ended up here in the RGSA forum. Here's why your forum was the only one to get any spam postings:

Since the RGSA forum was created as a quick "demonstration" forum, I originally set it up so your new members could post immediately without going through the normal email verification process. That's why all those "new members" from around the world were able to post here (and not to any other forums). We hadn't had any "break-ins" get beyond our simple questions, so it seemed like a good compromise. By the way, the   YELLOW on RED   avatar with flashing warning is automatically assigned to any members that haven't replied to the email verification process. That lets you know to be suspicious (in case, for example, you didn't notice they were typing in Russian).

Since it looks like this forum is slowly evolving past the "demo" stage, I've applied the permission protections that protect all the other US Hawks forums to this RGSA demonstration forum. Sorry, no more chances to practice your Russian translations, Bill.
