Torrey Hawks Second Sunday - July 2013 (and other news)

Postby Bob Kuczewski » Fri Jul 12, 2013 9:49 am

Hello Fellow Hawks,

The July forecast for our Second Sunday Fly-In / Meeting looks pretty good. Here's the forecast at this time:

Forecast_July_2013c.png

That shows a solid west wind from 11am until sunset. Of course things can change, but from that forecast, it should be a great day for hang gliding at Torrey!! Here's the link to check for updates:

Since this looks like it might be good enough weather for a good turnout, we're finally going to hold the drawing to give away this "Focused Pilot" bag:

The bag was sent to our club in gratitude for the Torrey Hawks participation in the USHPA site safety survey at Torrey Pines. Since our President Brian McMahon performed the actual survey, the bag belonged to him, but he has generously donated it to the club to give away to one of our members at one of our Second Sunday events. So we'll be doing that this Sunday.

Thanks for your membership!!

We had another nice Second Sunday at Torrey today. The wind was a little less than we might have wanted, but Mike got a nice long flight in the "club's" Falcon 195.

We had some entertainment from the bubble team:

And Tony showed off his mountain biking expertise:

We also had a rare visit from Auburn University's tiger mascot ("Aubie"):

Once again, 100% of the hang gliding flights were made by members of the Torrey Hawks Hang Gliding Club.

Club President Brian McMahon helps out at launch with back-up assistance from Willie:

Mike had a great launch, flight, and landing ...

We finally held the drawing for the USHPA "FOCUSED PILOT" bag, and Mike's luck was solid gold:

Thanks to all members of the Hawks who attended (or tried to attend ... Ernie's wheels may be in the shop for a while). And a special thanks to all members of the Hawks everywhere for your support of hang gliding at Torrey Pines!!!

By the way, for anyone interested in tracking predictions, here's the predicted forecast (about 2 days in advance):

And here's the measured conditions for that same day:

I've been wanting to find the time to write an adaptive program to learn the difference between predicted and actual so it could improve on the prediction for that site. But it's still pretty far down on my "to do" list.

Thanks Sam!!!

It was a pretty nice day at Torrey today also, and quite a few Hawks showed up for some good winds (including Mel, Charlie, Glen, Ted, and myself).

Mel and Charlie flew earlier, and I got a short flight on my Falcon (thanks again Wills Wing!!) ... but I didn't put my camera in video mode, so I've only got this one shot on launch:

Ted also took a flight on my Falcon ... which was great since it's been a while since he's flown:

But best of all, we signed up Torrey Hawks member #272:

Welcome to the club Gilles!!
