Let's play Chess

Postby Craig Muhonen » Tue Nov 30, 2021 3:09 pm

Ghris ;... and all US Hawks for that matter
1. Google lichess
2. scroll down to "create a game"
3. chess board comes up on left, and brown lines on right, with "anonymous"
4. The brown lines are constantly changing, but hoover your pointer over one of them until it
says, "join the game"
5. look for a 30-20 (time of whole game) game and hoover on it.
6. Game board comes up with a timer, and which color you are.
7. When you click on your piece it will show you all of it's possible moves, which is way, way
cool
8. Play around with it, it's free. It's a pretty powerful site and you can always
punch the 'back' arrow in upper left, and start over
9. After a few games with "anonymous", and practicing, you can create an account with your
own user name, and play with friends (me maybe) on your own time of your
choosing.
10. You can call a friend and play chess in real time, while "bantering" back and forth
11. Great way to learn this ancient game and you don't have to
worry about making the wrong move or taking up too much time

12. This site also keeps track of all the games you've played, and gives all the nomenclatures
of every move, so you can go back to a game and see which moves you've made to win or
lose.
Great way to quickly learn this great game, and then play on a real chess board, 'eye
ball to eye ball'

Since we're all on "lock-down".. ha..
Each US Hawk could have their own "user name" on lichess, and maybe the different clubs could have tournaments, and then play for The US Hawks Championship

Enjoy

Thanks for that link Craig!

I browsed the site and I liked their choice of colors. So I've changed our chess board colors from gray and white to brown and tan. Here's the difference:

I also like their choice of graphics for the pieces:

They look much better than the Unicode font on my phone. You can read about the Unicode chess symbols here:

     https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess_s ... in_Unicode

They show a number of fonts including these:

Our forum uses the first font by default, but I think LiChess uses the second font. I think their choice is better, and I'll try to make that change to the chessboard BBCode.

I've tried it three ways, phone, lap top, and Kindle, and for sure, for me anyways, the lap top is best.
I like your new choice of bigger and color for the pieces, it gives you a great look while you sit and 'ponder' the game.
In fact, that's a good word for the game of Chess, 'ponder', my grandson's take on the game.
I like lichess's options for the time of the game, and 20/30 minute games are my favorite.
Remember, "Think Long, Think Wrong". .. ha.. same in golf, and pocket pool.

It's all about "tempo", and, "the space in between".
