On Dec 02, 2010 (over a year ago) I wrote (http://ushawks.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=143#p699):

One of the things that generally keeps people from being too obnoxious is knowing that other people know who they really are. That's the problem with allowing anonymous postings - the feedback mechanism is broken. So I've decided that anonymous postings will only be allowed in certain areas of the forum. That gives anonymous people a place to speak their mind while not allowing them to over-run the forum with spam. I think that's a nice compromise, but we can always change it if there's a problem.

I clarified that policy on February 11th, 2011 in my welcoming post to Tad (http://ushawks.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1&start=20#p1254):

bobk wrote:We don't have too much to offer at this time, but the one thing we can offer is free speech. We allow everyone to speak. Our only requirement is that any attacks have to come from people who are willing to give their real identity. I respect anyone who's willing to stand publicly behind what they write, and I have very little respect for people who take pot shots under anonymous identities.

On October 23, 2011, I reposted that entire message in a conversation with "Nobody" and I specifically drew his (or her) attention to the following quote (http://ushawks.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=812#p2860):

Our only requirement is that any attacks have to come from people who are willing to give their real identity. I respect anyone who's willing to stand publicly behind what they write, and I have very little respect for people who take pot shots under anonymous identities.

Since that time, I have asked the person using the name "Nobody" to identify themselves after making personal attacks. He (or she) has failed to do so. In keeping with the policies outlined above, the person using the name "Nobody" is now restricted to posting in the Free Speech Zone.

I am still struggling with the proper policies to allow productive expression of all points of view while not allowing the forum to be abused or our purposes to be subverted. The goal of the US Hawks is to create a better national hang gliding organization than we have with USHPA. Our forum is already a better communication mechanism than we have with USHPA, but the details of how to manage it properly are still a work in progress. Posts like this from "Nobody" are illustrative of why USHPA might not be sponsoring a forum themselves (which is a shame). I remain hopeful that we can establish policies that will allow the US Hawks to benefit from a communication forum while not being dragged down by those with alternative agendas. As I said, it's still a work in progress and I appreciate everyone's help in making it work.
