New Hang Gliding History Web Site:   https://hghistory.org/

If you search the U.S. Hawks for "Everard" you'll find a few hits throughout the years. Most will reference the work of "Everard Cunion" and his extensive hang gliding pages available at https://everardcunion.com.

In a recent announcement, it was noted that the hang gliding history section of that site now has its own URL: https://hghistory.org/. Happy surfing!!

Hi Bob and all. My hang gliding history pages kind of grew out of my own hang gliding photo pages on my general interests web site. I then separated my own hang gliding pages from the general hang gliding history pages, which use mostly other people's photos. So I had two sort of parallel sets of hang gliding pages.

It then became obvious that the hang gliding history pages should be on their own web site. When Dave Cronk contacted me saying exactly that, I figured it was time to act. So I moved the pages to a dedicated web site and now I am in the privileged position of documenting the history of hang gliding!

I have received some great contributions from Dave Cronk, Frank Colver, Ken de Russy, Tony Prentice (a fellow Brit and a pioneer of the early days), Roy Haggard, Brian Wood (first British champion), New Zealander Graeme Bird, sail-maker Roly Lewis-Evans and others. Many pages contain links to other web sites including videos on YouTube. Foremost among the latter is Bill Liscomb's 2008 hang gliding history Big Blue Sky.

I am still going through a list of things to add.

Your site is one of the best I've seen.   

We have also had a number of U.S. Hawks members with a keen interest in preserving hang gliding history. Among them are Joe Faust, Frank Colver, Neil Larson, and Rick Masters. They have all shared parts of the tapestry that is the history of hang gliding. It's great to see so many people caring about preserving that history. Thanks.

I would say that our two most concerted efforts at collecting history are these:

This was an effort from June of 2012 to create a historical time line from individual posts. The idea was that people could post events with dates and a somewhat subjective "importance" value. Then a background program would assemble all of the posts into an interactive time line showing varying levels of detail.

This was an effort by Joe Faust started in August of 2012 to catalog pilots of historical interest:

Inductees in the Historical US Hawks honorary membership body (HUSH)
are people significant in USA history who have passed to the Next Thermal and were actively affecting the growth of hang gliding in some substantial manner.

Rick's USHGA.aero is an interesting site because it's a challenge to find out what's there. If you go to that site, there's no master (no pun intended) index page. You have to guess names to see if there's a page. These are some of the known sites there as reported by Joe Faust:
