I've noticed a LARGE oversight in the founding/transition team members. There's not one woman in the group.
I would like to encourage as many of our women pilots as possible to
join the ranks of the founding members of this new Association. Also,
there is more than one woman pilot who I'd like to recommend for the
transition team.
But, as they say, you have to be in it - to win it.
What say you, ladies? It would be great to have some balance to our competitive male egos. |
Well, I don't have any flight experience other than fantasy time, but I
do have the drive for it. I also have lady parts and I agree with the
concept of "options."
I am definitely willing to help out, so if you could use it I'd be honored to provide it. |
Hello Anadactyl (you've got to love that name)!!
Consider yourself a Founding Member of the HGAA for as long as you would like to have that title!!
I've added your name to my own semi-official list on page four of this topic.
By the way, we're only accepting Founding Members until July 4th,
2010. Anyone who joins by midnight on the 4th (anywhere in the world)
will be considered a Founding Member. It doesn't cost anything and
anyone who supports hang gliding is welcome.

Holly Molly Anadactyl,
It's good to have a woman aboard! You'll find your shipmates over at http://www.hgaa.org
But a little advice, . . . you may feel like you've jumped from
somewhere outside the kitchen, into the frying pan. But if you take
things easy there's a lot to learn and I'm sure there even some fun to
be had. Remember, we're currently "under construction".

Thank you, bobk. I'm honored to be a part of a movement with such potential.
Wingspan34, I seem to have a knack for jumping from the frying pan into
the nuclear reactor... I'm certain it will be a worthwhile and exciting
trip. I personally believe that no experience is fruitless unless you
learn nothing from it. Fortunately for me, learning is one of my
favorite activities. Besides, I can't very well let you boys have all the fun.

I know nothing of US HG politics, but it would seem that some are dissatisfied with the current setup.
Competition is a good thing, complacency is bad and the next time I go to the US I would like to sample some of your sites.
So I’m happy to offer my support from the UK.
Mike

Mike, there is something you can be of great help. We are trying to
understand how other countries organize training and ratings. Britain
has, or at least used to have, a pretty cool mentoring/coaching system.
Do you think you could describe it to us?
Thanks!

Sure, let me gather some information and I will post later.
I’m not the best person to ask about training, as I have never had a lesson in my life (Back in the day and all that).
Some of our club members are progressing through the system from ’Nonk ’ to Pilot I’ll get their feelings too.
Regards Mike

There are three recognised disciplines here in the UK (assuming we are
forgetting about paragliding). Hill, Aerotow, and Winch Tow. Within
these disciplines a newbie progresses from ...
EP. Elementary Pilot.
This is someone who has basically ‘had a go’ done some ground
handling & a few hops. This will be at recognised school and the
newbie will be keen to progress to becoming a …
CP. Club Pilot.
This means the newbie has learnt to fly to a satisfactory level.
The CP is now ready to have some (more) fun, all under the watchful eye of a CLUB COACH.
The new pilot is effectively ‘adopted’ by the club as his flying progresses, a kind of ‘provisional drivers licence’.
There are some restrictions a CP must observe such as no XCs (cough) unless under supervision.
The value of this type of club adoption cannot be underestimated in
my view. Club Coaches are experienced flyers with the ability to guide
others safely.
They are volunteers who have to work hard to obtain coach status and I applaud them all.
Some flyers seem happy to keep at CP level while most are keen to progress to becoming a …
PILOT.
This is a pilot proper.
The CP can go back to school to achieve this or it can be done at club level.
Becoming a pilot requires completing various tasks, attending lectures and passing a written examination.
Some Pilots then go on to achieving
AP. Advanced pilot.
These are the Sky Gods.
If you do all this as say a hill flyer and then decided you want to tow … you must do it all again!
Well not exactly, but what you must do is a conversion from one discipline to another.
This again can be done at club level.
I hope others from the UK will fill in any gaps and correct my errors.

I'd
be glad to help. This is my first post to this forum and I have not
flown a hang glider yet, but expect to in the near future and start my
training.
I do however have web development skills like: PHP, MySQL, Javascript, JQuery etc. that could be useful.

Hello timberwood and Fletcher!!
I've added your names to my unofficial HGAA membership list on page
4 of this topic. Eventually (when we have an official membership list)
I'll be sure you get added. You can also go over to the HGAA forum at
HGAA.org. But beware, we're having a lot of very boring (and sometimes
annoying) arguments about basics like how to vote. If you find that
interesting then you'll have plenty of fun. If not, just hang in there
until we get the organization moving. This is an exciting time for hang
gliding, and I appreciate your membership in the HGAA. Welcome aboard!!
