HGAA would be among my favorite picks as well.
Thanks for registering those $!>< !
How about a hanggliding.org poll for advisement? I'd like our official
votes to be public (part of the goal of this new organization is
openness), but a private poll to get a sense of how we stand might be
in order.
I'd suggest a poll that contains a list of nominated names along
with a "Let's take more time" option for those who don't think we're
ready to make a decision yet or not. The "nominated names" are those
names that any Founding member would like to nominate. Each member can
nominate multiple names, and a nomination isn't a vote - it's just a
way of saying that they think that particular name is worthy of
nomination.
Also, I don't know if we can have polls where people can give
multiple answers. If we do, then that would be helpful so we can get a
sense of what our Founding members like and don't like.
Finally, how does everyone feel about such an advisory poll? How
does everyone feel about an open vote? Don't let me run the show if
you've got another approach.

How
about this: We do a forum poll here on hanggliding.org for the names SG
listed that contain hang gliding. There will be a winning name. Then we
ask the founding members if they're OK with the vote and if yes, we
have a name. If not, we'll think of the next step. |

I'm good with that, and I think I'd probably vote for at least two of
the names that SG listed. But I don't think we should arbitrarily limit
ourselves to just those 4. I think if anyone wants to nominate any
names we should allow it. Are you OK with that?
If you are, then I'll assume that you're nominating the 4 names
that SG listed, and I'll happily second those 4 names (although I don't
think a second is needed).
So do you have any objection to leaving it open for anyone else to
nominate names before we start the poll? And if so, how long do you
think we should wait for additional nominations? A day? A few days?
Does anyone else have any comments on this process? We want to be inclusive here!!!

Bob,
I'm OK with anything really. Just wanted to suggest something that's
easy and gets us a result. The poll can have all the names that were
brought up. We should add some text explaining this is a hang gliding
specific org, so it would be good if that was reflected. If the public
polling looks like people didn't get that point we may be a little
unhappy with this first round and suggest another.
I'm probably just thick here, but if I vote for 4, how do I express
which one I really want? We need only one, right? Anything works for
me, my suggestion was to run a quick poll and if there's a very clear
winner and if nobody objects we could run with it. Otherwise do some
more voting.
As for the run time of the poll. I think it took around 3 days to have
the current number of members. So maybe 3 days, and if there's a clear
winner we could end it earlier?
I'll shut up now, others should share their opinion on it. |

I am good with the four names as well. We have decent domains reserved for:
AHGA.US
HGAA.ORG HGAA.US
HGAUSA.ORG
NHGA the only one available that is decent is NHGA.US
I am seeing NHGA.ORG was reserved about 10 years ago.
Getting a .aero name seems like we would need to have some sort of
aviation connection, which we kind of do but looks like there is some
additional work to be done.

I'm sorry. That was my fault for not being clear.
I think if we looked over this topic we'd find a whole bunch of
names. Some are very good, some not so good, and others were somewhat
of a joke (like my "FLAPA"). So I was thinking that now that the
"universe" of names is on the table, that we could start a more formal
nomination process where anyone who really liked a name could suggest
it for the poll. If you really liked more than one, then you could
nominate more than one. That way we'd have a smaller list for the poll
and each would get more votes.
It sounds like SG liked 4 names, and I think those 4 would be good
for the poll. But if anyone else wanted to add a few, maybe we could
wait a day or so for them to speak up before we start the poll. It's
important to remember that lots of people don't follow this web site
hour by hour (as you and I often do
), so I'd like to be sure that people who may only visit once a day (or
even once every other day) have a chance to weigh in. How does that
sound?
Here are the 4 names that I'd like to see added to the poll (the 4 that SG listed):
1. AHGA American Hang Gliding Association
2. HGAA Hang Gliding Association of America
3. HGAUSA Hang Gliding Association USA
4. NAHGA North American Hang Gliding Association
I'd also like to add hanggliding.org
even though SG isn't sure if he'd like to have it used for that purpose
(unless he's sure he doesn't want to use it). If it's on the list, then
we can see how it does in the poll. If it wins, and SG would rather not
have it be used, then we can go with the second choice or vote again.

Cool!!
Can I nominate you to conduct the poll? Maybe wait for a day or so to
see if anyone else wants to add any more names and then start the poll
for the new club?
Are you up for that?

Has
anyone approached USHPA about the possibility of acquiring the old
USHGA name from them? Do they technically still own it once they have
changed their name?
USHGA would be cool, but I like some of the ones proposed on here as
well. USHPA may not have a problem with it, but who knows for sure
until someone asks. |

I hereby nominate you to do the asking.
P.S. Please let me know if you need the email addresses for Lisa Tate,
Paul Montville, or Tim Herr (their lawyer). I've got them all.

Sure,
Bob, I'll kick off the poll. Question: are you proposing to consider
"hanggliding.org" as name for the association, in addition to it being
the cyber home? |

Sure, unless SG objects or would like to pair that site name with a different organization name of his choosing.
There are some complicating factors there, but SG has done so much for
hang gliding through his site, that I'd like to have it be considered
if that's something that he would like. That would take some additional
discussion to decide who would be "in charge", but at this preliminary
stage, I don't think we should rule it out, and that's why I've asked
to have it included.

I don't know if Hanggliding.org is specific enough...
Seems like a great name....That is if SG wants to marry the two worlds. |

i think the name is great for THIS site, but not so much for a national
club/organization. the "big 4" all have "association" in them which i
think is more appropriate/formal. if sg does decide to use THIS site,
the domain name doesn't have to EXACTLY match the organization name. |

I agree with everything you said. I like the "Association" part, and the names don't have to match. Check. Check.
But I'd leave that name/site pairing up to SG if he wants to add it to the list.
This is surely a big decision. If the new organization uses
hanggliding.org, then that's great because it's already the most
well-known hanggliding site on the web. So that's a huge boost to the
new organization. Hopefully that new organization will also draw more
visitors to the site and that will hopefully help SG. But an
organization needs to be able to control its own content. This won't be
the "bobk" association or the "SG" association. It will be its own
organization made up of its own elected President and its own elected
Board. They will want to have control over at least some aspects of the
web site (including some real estate on the front page). For this to
work, I think SG would have to agree to let the new organization do
what they wanted with that real estate, and that's a tough decision for
someone who's been so independent.
The bottom line is that it would have to be viewed as being
positive to both parties. Personally, I find that I can talk myself
either into it ... or out of it! But I'm just one opinion, and it will
be the votes of the Founding Members that really matter ... along with
SG's wishes of course.

Thanks for trying to get that domain. What a cool bunch of people!!
I think that means we have the following options (with web sites included):
1. AHGA American Hang Gliding Association (web site: AHGA.US)
2. HGAA Hang Gliding Association of America (web sites: HGAA.ORG or HGAA.US)
3. HGAUSA Hang Gliding Association USA (web site: HGAUSA.COM)
4. NAHGA North American Hang Gliding Association (web site: NAHGA.aero)
with a possible 5th option of whatever name SG would like paired with hanggliding.org.
Time to think about Leadership!!
While we wait for any more name suggestions (prior to posting the
poll), we should start thinking about leadership. Who's willing to play
at least a temporary role to help get the organization up and going? I
think the Founding members can act as a "Board" between now and July
4th, but we could possibly use a transitional chairman. I'd like to
nominate someone other than me. I think the duties would be to pretty
much "herd" the Founding members (Board) toward having a working
organization (basic bylaws and leaders) by July 4th. The actual
decisions should be made by a vote of the Board itself. Who would like
to do that job for about a month? As with the names, we should accept
nominations for a short time and then take a vote. |

Before
we chisel out the bylaws I suggest doing a reality-check first.
Touching base with the members and find out what they want. We can
partly do this on the forum, but it is probably not fully
representative, plus we may not get all types to voice their wishes and
expectations.
By types I mean student-pilots, normal pilots, tandem pilots,
instructors, mentors, towing operators, flight park owners and
operators, and so on. There are minorities that aren't easily heard,
but we don't want to skip them, even if it means we run out to meet
them in person and fill out a questionnaire for them. I.e. I'd love to
hear what Rob M. has to say to all this, KK.
There are questionnaire websites out there that we could use to
poll the future members. We may want to create a questionnaire for each
member group, collect the answers and present it on the wiki.
I'd also like to know how many are just happy with the USHPA, and
if not, what they'd like changed. That's another reality check: finding
out whether we will ever represent a majority, or what we'll have to
deliver to achieve it. We may find the part of unhappy members has such
conflicting expectations that it's going to be hard to bring together.
I'm not trying to discourage, but I'd like to be be aware of the type
and dimension of the challenge. |
